Elon Musk says that Apple “makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI” to top its App Store, an “antitrust violation”, and xAI will take legal action

Billionaire Elon Musk said on Monday his artificial intelligence startup xAI would take legal action against Apple

Reuters Surbhi Misra

Context & Ripple Effects

Musk’s accusation turned a dispute over AI visibility on Apple’s platform into a stated legal threat. It was quickly followed by xAI’s federal suit against Apple and OpenAI, which broadened the claim from App Store rankings to alleged coordination around AI competition.

The case centers on whether operating-system integration and app-store distribution can confer a durable advantage in consumer AI. Apple later said, in seeking dismissal, that it intended to integrate other chatbots, a direct response to the alleged exclusivity of its ChatGPT integration strategy.

First-order effects

  • xAI puts Apple’s App Store treatment of AI products under antitrust scrutiny and signals a legal challenge rather than a purely commercial dispute.
  • Apple and OpenAI face an allegation that their AI integration and platform choices disadvantage rival assistants; the later lawsuit over the integration and rankings formalized those claims.

Second-order effects

  • Rival AI providers gain a clearer incentive to seek comparable placement, integrations, or legal remedies when a mobile platform privileges a particular assistant.
  • Apple’s defense of how it selects and surfaces AI services becomes consequential for developers, because App Store ranking and OS-level access can shape consumer discovery.

Third-order effects

  • If courts treat assistant integration and app-store discovery as linked competitive bottlenecks, mobile platforms may face greater pressure to document neutral access and ranking policies for AI services.
  • The dispute tests whether consumer AI competition will be decided chiefly by model quality or by control of default distribution layers; the legal outcome remains unresolved in this coverage.

The trend: Consumer AI is moving from a model race toward a distribution-power contest over operating systems, app stores, and default integrations.

U.S. business titans babble endlessly about the noble virtues of free market innovative competition and then immediately whine like full-diapered toddlers when the market doesn't lay down obediently at their feet like a dutiful, panting Labrador [embedded post]

Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action.

This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.
  • @elonmusk Elon Musk on x
Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either 𝕏 or Grok in your “Must Have” section when 𝕏 is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.
  • @sama Sam Altman on x
@elonmusk will you sign an affidavit that you have never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that has hurt your competitors or helped your own companies? i will apologize if so.

@sama You got 3M views on your bullshit post, you liar, far more than I've received on many of mine, despite me having 50 times your follower count!

Elon's argument about Grok/X's placement in the Top Charts - to me at least - is pretty baseless. But he's spot on about this: it's very strange Grok isn't in the AI-powered apps “now trending” section. I will note Claude - who Apple is close with - isn't either though.

I hope someone will get counter-discovery on this, I and many others would love to know what's been happening. But OpenAI will just stay focused on making great products.

When someone boots up an iPhone for the first time, not only should they be presented w/a menu of Siri/Apple Intelligence alternatives (OpenAI, Grok, Gemini, Claude, Llama, etc), the chosen model should have deep iOS API access to make calls, draft/send emails/adjust volume, etc.
