Source: Netflix is using Runway AI's video generation tools for production; Disney is testing out the tools and talked with Runway about possible uses for them

Context & Ripple Effects

Runway had already built a Hollywood-facing position through a Getty Images AI-video partnership and substantial backing from Google, Nvidia and others in its 2023 funding round. That made it a plausible supplier as studios moved from evaluating generative video in isolation toward testing it in production workflows.

The reported Netflix use and Disney evaluation are meaningful because they put Runway in contact with two of the largest buyers of filmed entertainment, while Disney remains at the exploratory stage rather than a confirmed deployment.

First-order effects

  • Netflix gains access to Runway’s video-generation capabilities in its production process, making the vendor a live part of at least one major streamer’s workflow.
  • Runway gains a high-profile production customer and a prospective second buyer; Disney’s testing and discussions create an evaluation path, not a committed rollout.

Second-order effects

  • Other studio and streaming teams face added pressure to test where generative video fits—particularly in pre-production, marketing, or post-production—rather than treat the tools solely as experimental.
  • Runway’s commercial leverage with entertainment customers improves if deployments prove useful, while buyers are likely to demand workflow fit and safeguards before broader adoption.

Third-order effects

  • If major media companies repeat this pattern, AI-video competition will be decided less by standalone generation demos and more by integration into controlled production workflows.
  • The market may consolidate around vendors that can win enterprise studio deployments, with large content owners exerting buyer power over how tools are adapted for professional use.

The trend: This is one data point in the commercialization of generative video as a workflow tool for established entertainment companies.

The question is how much access do they get to the Netflix catalog for training? In the deal they made with Lionsgate the model is training on the Lionsgate catalog but that model will only be used in house, so everything is studio siloed. [image]
