NYC-based generative AI video startup Runway partners with Getty Images on an AI video model, shipping in the coming months for use in Hollywood and advertising

Context & Ripple Effects

Runway entered this partnership after raising $141M to expand its text-to-video platform, a sign that it was moving from a general-purpose creation tool toward bigger commercial deployments. Runway’s June funding round gave it backing from Google, Nvidia, and others before this move into Hollywood and advertising.

The Getty alliance ties an AI-video developer to a major visual-media supplier at the point where Runway is seeking professional creative users, rather than only individual experimenters.

First-order effects

  • Runway and Getty will develop and release a video-generation model aimed at Hollywood and advertising workflows, giving prospective users a product built for those commercial settings.
  • Getty gains a direct role in the AI-video product market, while Runway gains a distribution and credibility partner for reaching media and advertising buyers.

Second-order effects

  • Other generative-video vendors will face greater pressure to pair model capability with rights-oriented content partners and established routes into professional creative workflows.
  • Advertising and production buyers can evaluate AI-video tools less as standalone prompt interfaces and more as offerings connected to known media suppliers and industry-specific use cases.

Third-order effects

  • If similar partnerships proliferate, competitive advantage in generative media may shift from model quality alone toward control of content relationships, commercial distribution, and workflow integration.
  • The arrangement points to a market in which media libraries become strategic partners for AI developers, though the durability of that model depends on whether professional users adopt the resulting tools.

The trend: Generative-media companies are moving toward commercialized, workflow-specific products built with content and distribution partners.

Very happy to read that. GettyImages have changed their mind about AI. From a lawsuit against StableDiffusion to a partnership with the company that released SD1.5. It's a very good news for AI Industry!

Bravo @runwayml. Their partnership with @GettyImages is a move in the right direction for generative AI models trained fairly. There are outstanding questions - most importantly, will the new Runway <> Getty model use *only* Getty's images, or will other data also be used. But...

This removes the option of Stability settling the lawsuit with a partnership + licensing deal. That option was always on the table... But the fact one CEO failed to grab the opportunity, and another stole it from under their nose is not a good sign for Stability's future.
