Apple says COO Jeff Williams will step down in July, overseeing design and health until he retires later in 2025; SVP of Operations Sabih Khan will become COO

Apple Inc. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams is retiring as the company's longtime No. 2, marking a major changing of the guard …

He is, of course, two years younger than Tim Cook.  [embedded post]

Full story: Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams is stepping down in a blockbuster changing of the guard. As one former executive who reported to Williams told me, “the band is dissolving.” Details here, what it means and what happens next: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

I like how the press release says this succession is long planned, and yet they aren't ready to say who is taking over Apple Watch and Health initiatives. Also, Cook (himself set to retire in the foreseeable future) has so many direct reports now lol.

Apple didn't announce what will happen to the Watch and Health teams but here's the likely outcome: Apple never said this but Watch HW was already given to Ternus years ago. You can bet watchOS and health software will go to Federighi. Fitness+ will obviously go to Services.

For those wondering why Apple's design team would report to Tim Cook: the hardware design and software teams design were merged under one roof so to speak several years ago. It's not set up to report to two different people. So Cook was the only real option.

Two ways to read this: 1. Tim Cook is going to be CEO for a bit. or 2. HairForce One is the likely next CEO. Either way Jeff wasn't going to get the job. So he is taking his millions and walking into the Apple sunset. (pun intended.)

Super proud of my friend Sabih, who will step into COO role at Apple. If you met him you would instantly know what a gem of a human he is. https://www.cnbc.com/...

Wow, very big changes at Apple

So who's next in line for Tim Apple's job now?
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
As I reported a year ago, hardware engineering chief John Ternus is primed to be the next CEO of Apple when Tim Cook eventually retires. https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @parkerortolani Parker Ortolani on x
this also increases the likelihood that John Ternus is indeed marked as next in line for the CEO job in the succession plan
  • @parkerortolani Parker Ortolani on x
fascinating that design will report directly to Tim instead of them promoting or hiring someone to lead that org (though I suppose that could change in the coming months), they really need a visionary product person in that position

Williams is retiring end of year. Design teams will start reporting to Cook at that time.
  • @aaronp613 Aaron on x
I guess that means John Ternus is the only option left for Tim Cook's eventual replacement as CEO [image]

BREAKING: Apple COO Jeff Williams is stepping down from role, staying in smaller job at the company. Sabih Khan taking job.
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
Safe to say Jeff isn't going to be the next CEO at Apple. Lots of folks in their late 50s early 60s are moving on with a few notables with either more to deliver, more to prove or delusional thinking they have a chance at CEO

“Apple's design teams reporting to an operations executive makes no more sense than it would for Apple's operations teams to report to, say, Alan Dye.”  Tim Cook is an operations executive.  [Quote from Daring Fireball article]
