Alphabet reports Q2 revenue up 14% YoY to $84.7B, net income up 29% YoY to $23.6B, Search revenue of $48.5B, up from $42.6B YoY, headcount down 1% to 179,582
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - July 23, 2024 - Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG, GOOGL) today announced financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2024.

Context & Ripple Effects
Alphabet entered the quarter after a Q4 in which revenue rose 13%, net income rose 52%, Cloud revenue grew 26%, and headcount fell more than 4% in the related coverage. This report extends that combination of growth and a leaner workforce, while showing that Search remains the company’s largest disclosed revenue engine.
The following quarter, Alphabet reported 15% revenue growth in Q3 and 12% Search growth, while a later Q2 report showed revenue reaching $96.43B at the same 14% growth rate. Together, the coverage describes continued top-line expansion rather than a one-quarter rebound.
First-order effects
Alphabet’s $48.5B in Search revenue and 29% increase in net income give the company more near-term financial capacity while its core advertising business continues to grow.
Headcount fell 1% to 179,582 even as revenue increased 14%, strengthening the company’s reported operating leverage.
Second-order effects
Sustained Search growth raises the performance bar for advertising and search rivals, which must compete against a larger and still-growing revenue base.
The pairing of revenue growth with lower staffing reinforces pressure on large technology companies to pursue efficiency without surrendering growth; Alphabet had already reported a sharper headcount reduction in Q4.
Third-order effects
If this pattern persists, Alphabet’s scale will increasingly rest on expanding output from a relatively stable workforce, making investment allocation and productivity more central to its earnings profile.
The results are another data point in the industry’s shift toward financing growth and infrastructure from cash-generative platform businesses, though the coverage alone does not establish how durable that leverage will be.
The trend: Large platform companies are seeking to pair durable core-business growth with tighter operating structures that convert more revenue into profit.
On #Google earnings, @sundarpichai kind of admits lack of training data is a big issue that could slow rate of #AI improvement: “I still think there is enough optimizations we are all doing, which is driving constant progress in terms of the capabilities....”
GOOG now down as they touch upon margins again. 2024 margins reiterated to be expanded versus 2023, but Pixel release and depreciation will impact Q3 margins
$GOOG first take is the story is intact. Stock up 1% in after-hours. Search and GPC were sold, Tube was soft. 1. Search 14% y/y (vs 14% last quarter), Cloud 29% y/y (vs 28% last quarter), and a slight miss in YouTube ads but still growing 13% (vs 21% last quarter. 2. Capex

My favorite day of the quarter, earnings. At current rate, if Google Cloud were its own business its revenues would place it 87th in the Fortune 500. Six months ago, would have been 114th.
