This is the next step in a deliberate cross-platform expansion of Google's Cardboard ecosystem. The company had already updated the Cardboard SDK with iOS support alongside the larger-phone headset redesign in mid-2015, and its capture tooling followed the same arc: the Cardboard Camera app launched on Android first, with an iOS version arriving months later.

What changes here is distribution rather than hardware: VR View makes 360-degree content embeddable like any other media object, and a native Cardboard SDK gives iOS developers first-class tools instead of relying on the earlier cross-platform SDK work. That matters because Google had been steadily deepening the platform around Cardboard — from the Works With Google Cardboard certification program to positional audio added to the SDK in January 2016.
