By mid-2015 Google was already treating Cardboard as a standards play rather than a giveaway: two months earlier it launched the Works With Google Cardboard certification program so third-party headsets could carry compatibility guarantees. Today's announcement widens all three layers of that stack at once — the viewer itself (sized for larger phones), the software layer (SDK extended to iOS), and the supply of native content (a 16-camera 360-degree recorder built with GoPro).
