This upgrade lands mid-arc for Google's cheap-headset VR push. In 2015 the company widened the hardware funnel with a redesigned Cardboard that fits larger phones and added iOS SDK support, then gave users a way to make their own content via the Cardboard Camera app for 3D panoramas. Positional audio closes the sensory gap: a phone-in-a-cardboard-box rig could now convince the ear as well as the eye.

It also sets up what came next. The tooling here matures into Resonance Audio, Google's later open-source, cross-platform spatial audio SDK — meaning this Cardboard-only feature was the first draft of a strategy to own VR sound across platforms.
