Facebook is exporting its data-center playbook to carriers. Weeks before this announcement, Verizon and AT&T joined its Open Compute Project effort, already framed as a challenge to network vendors like Cisco and Juniper; the Telecom Infra Project extends that open-hardware model to wireless access, launched onstage at Mobile World Congress with Intel and Nokia as founding members.

The move sits inside a broader arc of Facebook networking work: it had already open-sourced Augmented Traffic Control for simulating cellular conditions in 2015 and was developing millimeter-wave networks for Internet.org. Within months came OpenCellular, an open-source wireless access platform for remote areas, and by early 2018 TIP had grown past 500 members including China Unicom and Sprint.
