OpenAI fires back at Elon Musk's lawsuit, accusing Musk of suing when the company “started making meaningful progress towards OpenAI's mission without him”

Musk filed the lawsuit last week against OpenAI, Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman

Bloomberg

Maybe most notable thing about this is that Ilya signed it??  First sign he's back since last year, no?

What a mendacious company to the very core. For years OpenAI promised to “open source technology for the public benefit” when possible, even in legal filings as a “charitable” organization. And yet they never meant it, except as a recruiting ploy, @AGRobBonta @Public_Citizen [ima…

OpenAI's reply to @ElonMusk may turn out to be one of the biggest own-goals of all time, because (as explained below) it inadvertently revealed that they have been lying from the jump. It may also put them in legal jeopardy over their 501(3)(c) non-profit filings. Huge... [image]

So Elon marked down OpenAI to a ZERO and told Sam he needed billions per year, and when Sam got the $10b he needs, Elon sues because OpenAI didn't merge with Tesla?

It's totally unsafe to regulate or “regulate” existential risk. You have to lock it down hard and shoot anyone who tries to approach it. Isn't that obvious?

OpenAI's letter back to Elon is a fascinating look into inside baseball. The thing that stands out is how scared everybody was of Google! [image]

What everyone openly suspected is now in the open. We know all their arguments against open source were BS and greed-driven. I would also accuse OpenAI of tax fraud and improperly claiming non-profit status. It also applies to Anthropic, which is cut from the same cloth.

I think one of the interesting things about this whole Elon-OpenAI saga is potentially how much everyone overestimated Google's competitiveness in this arena. In 2018 everyone's like “oh you can't beat Google” and like Google doesn't really seem like a serious competitor atm

@pmarca It's worth noting as you definitely know this has been the classic argument agains open source relative to security. The idea that open source can't be as secure because the “bad guys” can see the source to exploit weakness. Closed source prevents that. This has been 100%…

@OpenAI Dear @openAI This is baloney: “We are dedicated to the OpenAI mission and have pursued it every step of the way.” The original mission was to be “unconstrained by a need to generate a financial return”, “not organized for ... private gain”, “seek[ing] to open source techn…

I'm glad they didn't successfully get gaslighted into going to Tesla. Tesla OpenAI would be a timeline I wouldn't be too keen on. But it shows that our dear Elon would have had no problem with all the OpenAI course if it had been in Tesla's interest.
