The story behind the story

A look at Palworld, a Pokémon-like game launched on January 19, which has sold 5M+ copies and is now the most played game on Steam, amid IP infringement claims

The Pokémon-like has sold over 5 million copies in the three days since its early access launch.

The Verge Ash Parrish

Context & Ripple Effects

Palworld’s breakout quickly moved from a launch story to an ownership dispute: days later, The Pokémon Company said it had not authorized another company’s use of its IP and would investigate the game’s use of Pokémon-related IP.

The commercial momentum also broadened its platform significance when Microsoft called it Xbox Game Pass’s biggest third-party launch. That success later coincided with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company bringing a patent-infringement suit against Pocketpair over multiple alleged patent violations.

First-order effects

  • Pocketpair gains an unusually large early-access audience and stronger distribution leverage, while facing immediate scrutiny over the game’s similarities to Pokémon.
  • Nintendo and The Pokémon Company must decide how to protect their IP as the title’s audience and visibility expand; related coverage shows that response ultimately became patent litigation.

Second-order effects

  • Platform partners, including Microsoft, gain a proven engagement draw but inherit greater reputational and operational exposure if an IP dispute constrains updates or availability.
  • The dispute makes Pocketpair’s product decisions more consequential: its later account that updates were litigation-driven indicates legal pressure can shape a live game after launch.

Third-order effects

  • If rights holders increasingly use patents to challenge game mechanics or implementation, legal review may become a more central constraint on how smaller studios build genre-adjacent hits.
  • The case illustrates a recurring tension in games: rapid, platform-amplified distribution can turn questions of creative similarity into long-running litigation and post-launch design compromises.

The trend: Breakout live-service games are increasingly tested not only by player demand and platform reach, but by how IP owners enforce rights after a fast launch.

“Palworld is completely different from Pokémon” That's what Palworld lead designer Takuro Mizobe told me in 2021.  Today, I wrote about the game's incredible launch... ... shared more from my old chat with Mizobe ... and got a Palworld take from The Pokémon Co's former top lawyer…

[3rd highest all-time peak in Steam history! ] Steam users currently playing #Palworld has exceeded 1.5 million! Thank you so much for making us the 3rd highest concurrently played game on Steam ever! We are working hard to make the game as enjoyable as possible. Thank you! [imag…

Yeah, I'm surprised by how quickly this is escalating. I'll try to organize my own hot take-ish thoughts in a thread, separating concept, execution, and dev. First: it's not a Pokemon-like game. Digimon is. And even if it was, so what? (cries in FPS, BRs, Souls, hero shooters...)

i think it's important to actually play the game and realize palworld is quite transformative
  • @dark1x @dark1x on x
@GenePark I'm curious to understand what you find interesting about the game itself. Most of the uniqueness seems to stem from jamming Pokemon-like monsters into an Ark clone - it's a strange contrast with ‘Hire this man, Nintendo’ energy.
  • @genepark Gene Park on x
obviously a consequence of this game being more about base building than monster to monster competition. but it's still surprising to see how little violence can be.

@AlexSmitk 😒 ...or Nintendo fans, or Ouya fans, Sega fans, Valve fans, Atari fans and whatever other companies made consoles past present and future. Stop trying to perpetuate a “console war”. It's not real and it's a boring narrative. 👋
  • @jezcorden Jez on x
There's still zero real evidence that Palworld was built using ai, despite various outlets suggesting so.
  • @repiteo Thaddeus Crews on x
Assuming this Palworld developer writeup is being accurately translated, this was the most in-over-their-heads team of all time: • First time creating models instead of purchasing • No source control nor naming conventions • DIDN'T KNOW WHAT A “RIG” WAS https://note.com/...

Both things can be true: Palworld is aping Pokemon, and also caring that a game copied Pokemon is cop shit.
  • @nightskyprince_ @nightskyprince_ on x
@GenePark Yeah.. playing the game over the weekend there's no way current AI tools can generate most of what the game has to offer. In fact if AI was THAT good as it is, the fight against it would already be over.
  • @bitnerd_ Derrick Bitner on x
Straight up, no BS. I'm sorry for being incorrect in regard to Palworld. I was working off information that did not apply to the game whatsoever. Its success is immense and I jumped the gun. The egregious tweet is deleted and I hope its fans have fun with the game.

🧵THREAD🧵 Thought i would make a thread to tell people more about the Pocket Pair studio AKA the studio behind newest hit game Palworld and give more insight on their previous works and what you can expect in the future (as there seems to be a ton of misinformation) [image]

The magic of Pokémon isn't just the gameplay or the monsters or the catching. It's the biggest IP in the world because people enjoy living in what BEGAN already as an established culture and world.

because this is twitter, i'm not *defending* copycat work. it's very obvious to anyone that the designs are copied. me saying all this about palworld does not mean i think palworld is some scion of creativity. but it's also solidly designed video game.
  • @bucky_cm Bucky on x
@AlexSmitk We have received no death threats from anyone in regards to console support. No threats from any Xbox, PlayStation or PC player about anything console or platform related.

I have honestly never seen so much anger and paranoia happen so quickly over a videogame. Wilder still that it's a goofy Pokemon parody from a small independent studio. The latest talking point is they ‘took the money and ran’ on their previous early access game, Craftopia: [imag…

One thing about Palworld is that it's missing a sense of place and lore so far. The monsters have a lot of personality but there's as little context to this world as an Atari 2600 game. Pokémon begins with a mother, a mentor figure, a best friend, a hometown and a lifelong goal.

despite the assault rifles, palworld is actually far less violent than pokémon, at least the way i play it. i can spend more than an hour not throwing a punch, shooting a bullet or even an arrow in pokémon, one of the very first things you do is fight, and then you keep doing it

I am the exact opposite of a Nintendo stan (or a Ark/Wildcard stan), but seeing Palworld make tens of millions of dollars off of the most blatantly creative bankrupt, poorly put together asset flip game is so depressing. Their entire company strategy seems to be theft. [image]

everyone keeps showing me the tweets and they're not that convincing. if you put two wolves inside each other, that's literally two wolves.

The success of Palworld proves that the only thing customers *actually* care about is a good game. AI? Slavery? Beastiality? Copyright infringement? It's a video game. These are pretend problems that people don't actually care about Make good game=people buy game Simple

  • @chezi34 @chezi34 on x
Literally every Pokémon fan I've seen “complaining” about PalWorld is more concerned about it being a game made out of ill intent (stealing models and designs) rather than truly trying to be its own thing and being a proper competitor

You can't just be out here saying something is “an AI product” with just insinuations and no actual proof, no matter how you feel about it. This is just being taken as fact and blasted all over here. I get people are paranoid but this is wholly unhelpful
  • @genepark Gene Park on x
it's hard to have a normal conversation about the game. but also i can't stop talking about it. it's a fascinating project and my feelings about it are still solidifying, but i find it at least more interesting than most of the critically acclaimed games last year

pal world is successful because they cut trailers where you sell pikachu into slavery to an arms dealer and priced their game at 26 dollars, I think trying to assign too much meaning beyond that is silly.

Nintendo lawyers are some of the most ruthless in the industry. Palworld was announced like what, two? Three years ago? If there was any real case here, Nintendo would've been all over it. Not Twitter armchair lawyers.
