Texas' AG, “troubled” by Elon Musk's claims, probes Media Matters, which calls X's suit “frivolous”; X avoids anti-SLAPP statutes by filing in the 5th Circuit

X, formerly Twitter, has followed through with owner Elon Musk's threat to sue the left-leaning nonprofit Media Matters.

I don't know about you but if I'm an advertiser, the number of my ads I want adjacent to Nazi content is exactly zero

Texas GOP AG Ken Paxton opens investigation in an effort to ensure white supremacists, Neo nazis and Anti-Semites can openly spew hate on X. This perfectly sums up the GOP https://www.foxnews.com/...

What Ken Paxton is doing should be the news story of the day.  Musk's stupid lawsuit is going nowhere.  Meanwhile Texas is actually attacking free speech and a free press based on absolutely no crime and very dubious jurisdiction.  This is deeply disturbing and dangerous

Elon Musk and Ken Paxton are proving that they have no interest in free speech and just want their speech.  Musk thinks he can buy his way, and Paxton thinks he can bully his way.  They're weak men whose anti-American aims destine them to that infamous space in history.

To be clear, extremely rich people with stuff to hide and a fading grip on power are trying to sue investigative journalism out of existence.  Really up to American citizens if we survive this.  Demand more out of execs running these places who don't understand this yet.

So the guy who bought a certain social platform claiming he was saving free speech just sued an advocacy organization because it engaged in free speech critical of that guy and his management of the platform?  Got it.

Another way of saying this is that X's largest advertisers had their ads run next to racist, incendiary content some of the time.

The complaint places a bizarrely strong emphasis on this “ad filter for new users” In other words, 'on the 31st day a user is here, that's when we start showing them the nazi content....'

Things are going well over on Twitter.  The hashtag “heilhitler” is trending because users are reporting that ads for the German government and various companies are appearing next to searches for it.  It appears that Twitter has now nuked all ads in search results in response.
  • @rodhilton Rod Hilton on threads
Elon Musk made a social network where all the worst people on it pay $8 to self-select into your block list and there aren't any ads because all the advertisers left, on paper this should be working.

In hindsight, maybe the guy who personally cancelled a fan's Tesla pre-order for criticizing his launch event wasn't going to be the champion of free speech.  Actually, I don't think any hindsight is needed.  It was a pretty easy conclusion in midsight and foresight too.

Musk is suing Media Matters because they reported factual information about hate speech on Xitter.  You can help Media Matters fight Musk's frivolous lawsuit by donating to their fund 👀⤵️

/2 That's because X's purpose is to harass and abuse and maximize the cost of litigation, and anti-SLAPP statutes interfere with that aim.  It's because X's attorneys are unethical shitbirds.

This reads like a press release, not a court filing to me. X does admit the ads were shown next to hateful content, but argues it was “rare.” This is the same strategy employed by advertisers that got YouTube to demonetize political content in 2017.
