Meta knows that the vast majority of people don't go into app settings for this sort of thing -there's a robust literature around opt-in versus opt-out.  By setting the default as “opt-out” and requiring users to know they have to opt-in and actually do so, Meta is basically killing content on Threads related to civil rights.

Some users on Instagram and Threads complain that a new setting to limit political content, which Meta announced in February, is enabled by default

By setting the default to “opt-out”, Meta is severely limiting the reach of political content and social content and civil rights content on Threads and Instagram, in so doing Meta is disincentivizing the creation of that content on this platform.

Alright, so I owe an apology to everyone to whom I recommended Threads.  You, your organization, your principal, your outlet, your group shouldn't invest time in Threads if you are writing about anything the algo-behind-the-curtain may consider political. …

Meta plans to not “proactively recommend political content from accounts you don't follow” on Threads, matching the company's policy on Facebook and Instagram

including this feed. … Seth Abramson / @seth.abramson : Now that Threads has announced it will throttle political content, please do, when/as possible: 1.  Repost political content...

The complaint places a bizarrely strong emphasis on this “ad filter for new users” In other words, 'on the 31st day a user is here, that's when we start showing them the nazi content....'

Texas' AG, “troubled” by Elon Musk's claims, probes Media Matters, which calls X's suit “frivolous”; X avoids anti-SLAPP statutes by filing in the 5th Circuit

X, formerly Twitter, has followed through with owner Elon Musk's threat to sue the left-leaning nonprofit Media Matters.

I've read the X Corp v. Media Matters complaint, and I'm not a legal expert, but y'all over at X keep admitting that your company actually served the ads that Media Matters says X did - that can't be sound legal strategy... *Oh, no, wait, I'm a lawyer

Another way of saying this?  X ran some ads that was “below” the Global Alliance for Responsible Media's brand safety floor

Media Matters' claims that some companies' ads appeared next to antisemitic content do not seem to be “manufactured”, contrary to what X alleges in its suit

Another way of saying this is that X's largest advertisers had their ads run next to racist, incendiary content some of the time.
