A review of Valve's $549 Steam Deck OLED: a great screen, a longer battery life, and better ergonomics, but refresh rate issues and the platform is not stable

A new screen, a pile of improvements, and better pricing make this everything the original should have been.

Hmm, I don't *need* a Steam Deck by any means, but a(n increasingly vocal) part of my brain says I do so I can actually experience this Flatpak/Flathub distribution method on Steam Deck desktop mode... 🤔  —  https://www.theverge.com/...  That limited edition OLED model looks HAWT…

6nm on the OLED vs 7nm on the LCD variant, 6400 MT/s vs 5500 MT/s, 50 Wh vs 40 Wh Battery aside, the difference that 900 MT/s can make is fascinating. Valve did all recent Steam Deck owners dirty, though lol. I hope the display and battery are swappable with old models. [image]

This is the OLED Steam deck. It's very pretty. Battery life is better enough that it's much closer to a portable device now. Best screen on a handheld at this point, IMO. But I'm still getting better performance from the Ally Extreme (which has come a long way since June). [image…

Valve has a new Steam Deck. Not SD 2.0. An OLED version of original unit; same horsepower Same size as original, but display is bigger (See pic: Citizen Sleeper is OLED model) I've used it a little in the past week (mostly been vacationing). Bigger, brighter screen is good [image…

My Steam Deck OLED review: I've had it for the last week. With the new battery life, I can play modern and heavy budget games like “Lies of P” and even “Cyberpunk” for 4-5 hours. Valve credits Nintendo for expanding the market for OLED handhelds. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ .…

Oh man, literally the “Nintendo Switch QOL Upgrade path” - they aren't even pretending anymore. On the real, OLED panels are super nice. Probably should have been an optional upgrade at launch.

One other benefit of the OLED - if you're playing a 16:9 game on this 16:10 screen, the black area could appear completely dark now.

Steam Deck OLED looks really good, but Asus ROG Ally still has some advantages: - Xbox app for Game Pass - Goes on sale regularly in my region lately - better Processor

It's the Steam Deck that should have been — a new screen, bigger battery, quieter fan, a pile of improvements, and better pricing make this a small, but possibly the best console revision ever. Watch our review of the Steam Deck OLED here: https://www.youtube.com/... [video]
