Elon is about to find out that “free speech” actually costs a lot, in fines, in the EU.

UPDATE: Elon is in one of his playful moods But he is playing with fire with his tweet's tone Thierry Breton won't appreciate Musk trying to dictate terms and play out the drama on X And if Musk's post leads to his goons trolling and attacking Breton... he's going to come down ev…

In the past couple of days, we've seen an increase in daily active users on @X in the conflict area, plus there have been more than 50 million posts globally focusing on the weekend's terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas. As the events continue to unfold rapidly, a cross-company l…

Following the terrorist attacks by Hamas against 🇮🇱, we have indications of X/Twitter being used to disseminate illegal content & disinformation in the EU. Urgent letter to @elonmusk on #DSA obligations ⤵️ [image]

@ThierryBreton Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports. Please list the violations you allude to on 𝕏, so that that the public can see them. Merci beaucoup.

@elonmusk Vu, merci. You are well aware of your users' — and authorities'— reports on fake content and glorification of violence. Up to you to demonstrate that you walk the talk. My team remains at your disposal to ensure DSA compliance, which the EU will continue to enforce rigo…

Never good when you have to get a scolding in the form of a letter from a European Commissioner to comply with the law. Reads like a teachers note.
  • @robertjbateman Robert Bateman on x
Breton tweets an open letter to Musk regarding DSA compliance. It contains a lot of “urge” and “invite”-type words. Musk asks Breton to cite the DSA provisions X has allegedly violated. Unusual to sympathetise with Musk, but it's a fair question. The letter is imprecise. [image]

The EU hired an Omidyar-funded firm ("Reset") that claims to be “disinformation experts”. It issued a study accusing Big Tech platforms - especially X - of insufficiently censoring “pro-Russia propaganda.” The EU has a new censorship law and intends to use it to punish X:

The EU, which has more consumers (that's what matters for Musk) than even the US has the collective clout to call this out 👇- and Musk will have to take notice and react Yet another reason to be proud to be 🇪🇺 👏@ThierryBreton

@anneapplebaum Dear Ms. Applebaum, Might we consider using this Tw venue less, knowing that Musk has no plans to slow disinformation? Interpret as hypothetical, if you wish. I have reduced Twitter usage 80% and life is better, information clearer.

A long overdue first step by @ThierryBreton Under Musk, X has become a swamp of disinformation..including from the owner of the platform. EU laws must apply & if not enough, X should be regulated until it cleans up its act!

Why didn't he address the letter to the ceo? Just curious. That would be normal protocol.

Musk warned by EU commissioner on the need to remove false and misleading info from Twitter/X/whateveryoucallit. Warns about potential penalties. This could be first test case of EU's Digital Services Act, which compels big platforms to suppress harmful content.

It's just a cesspool for the worst people on social media and it's getting worse every week. I've been telling myself for months that the good here outweighs the bad, but I don't believe that anymore.

Oh, you're saying they raised “millions”? I doubt that's true. But we know Biden gave Iran billions. And last I checked, one billion is 1000X a million. So let's deal with the 1000X issue first, and end DC's fiat funding of terrorism. https://www.wsj.com/...

That's also why we need to sensible crypto legislation passed here in the United States without further delay. We need this industry flourishing in nations committed to the rule of law, not driven to places where human rights and public safety mean much less. 3/3

To the extent small amounts of crypto were used by Hamas or Iran, the facts will show that most of these txns were powered by offshore exchanges already under investigation by DoJ. Punitive U.S. crypto policy will only hurt good actors here and push even more activity offshore.
  • @campbelljaustin Austin Campbell on x
Blockchains are more transparent, thus we can more easily see transactions and amounts. Let me ask the next question: how much did Hamas take in through the traditional system? Perhaps crypto is being punished for being a better system for detecting bad activity?
