Google updates its generative AI-based Search Generative Experience with more multimedia, faster responses, and additional context for links in its summary box

Multimedia content has been rewarded significantly in the most recent algorithm updates … Forums: Msmash / Slashdot : Google's AI Search is Getting More Video and Better Links

The Verge David Pierce

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already signaled a plan to make Search more visual and conversational, including short video and social content, in its earlier vision for a more visual, personal search experience. This SGE update turns that direction into product changes within the AI-generated results interface.

The emphasis on link context matters because SGE sits between a user’s query and the open web: richer summaries can improve navigation, while the way sources are presented shapes what traffic publishers receive. Google later extended SGE’s creative capabilities with prompt-based image generation and writing tools, reinforcing the product’s expansion beyond conventional results.

First-order effects

  • SGE users get faster AI responses, more multimedia in summaries, and more explanatory context around cited links, changing how they assess whether to open a result.
  • Google makes the AI summary box a more information-dense destination, increasing the prominence of video and linked source material inside Search’s generative experience.

Second-order effects

  • Publishers and video creators have a stronger incentive to make material that can be surfaced clearly in multimedia AI results, while also watching whether contextual links translate into referral visits.
  • Search advertisers and campaign creators face a product environment increasingly shaped by query context; Google was separately bringing generative AI into ad relevance and ad creation, tying AI answers more closely to Search’s commercial layer.

Third-order effects

  • If AI summaries become the default starting point for richer queries, search competition shifts from ranking a list of pages toward controlling the interface that selects, summarizes, and attributes web content.
  • The model raises the durable publisher-control question: source visibility may improve through richer citations, but publishers’ leverage depends on whether those citations continue to send meaningful user traffic.

The trend: This is one step in search’s shift from a link-ranking product toward a multimodal AI interface that mediates discovery, answers, and commercial intent.

Some SGE news: 1) Images were recently added & video is coming over the next week 2) We're continuing to improve response speed 3) We're experimenting with new, easier ways for people to find web pages that support information in AI overviews Learn more: https://blog.google/...

Just this morning, on an SGE webinar, someone asked me if I'd ever seen YouTube in SGE and I said not yet. Guess that just changed 😅😅

I started using @andisearch last year as my default search on one of my mobile browsers to experiment and learn. That they were first mover here - yet never mentioned in press - adds fuel to antitrust evidence. It should be prime time for them!

New from Google: 1. You'll see images and videos in SGE starting next week. 2. SGE is faster now. 3. SGE now includes links to websites along with the publishing date. Also, ads will continue to appear in SGE. https://blog.google/... [image]
