Current and ex-employees: Meta staff generally aren't using the Quest 3, especially for meetings, and even those in the VR unit don't use it regularly for work

Meta employees don't seem interested in working in the metaverse.  But first...  Three things you need to know today:

“Meta isn't practicing what it preaches. Employees generally aren't using the headsets, especially for meetings. According to 11 current and former employees. Even those in the VR part of the organization don't use it regularly for work” https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @jessefelder Jesse Felder on x
'Some teams - including policy head Nick Clegg's - tried experimental VR meetings, only to abandon the practice after finding it uncomfortable and glitchy, one of the people said.' https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @pt Parker on x
Maybe I lack vision, but the idea of improving meetings with VR makes no sense at all to me. This isn't reproducing what's good about IRL work. Just give me The Legend of Zuck: Breath of the Wild and take my money. https://twitter.com/...

Best thing about this is how ridiculous it makes their own Quest Pro look

Watching the Meta Quest 3 announcement trailer where they proudly list “500+” titles 💀  —  It's not going to be hard for xrOS to catch up on software numbers, that's for sure...  https://www.youtube.com/...

Meta is coming in hot with the Quest 3. $50 Cheaper, doesn't need any other device baseline, backward compatible with over base 500 pieces of software, functions as a Windows Mixed Reality headset, making it work as a generic PC VR headset. https://twitter.com/...

.@MetaQuestVR Quest 2's price drop and the upcoming launch of the Quest 3 might help turn things around for their market share https://www.idc.com/... [image]

Zuck pulling the right moves again. $META showing off the cool new Quest 3 right before $AAPL launches their overpriced VR option. Well done.

@StarFire2258 @Qualcomm The games we announced in the Gaming Showcase are all playable on both Quest 2 and 3, and we expect that to remain the norm for quite a while. Of course mixed reality and high power titles may start to target Quest 3 over time
  • @palmerluckey Palmer Luckey on x
Say what you will about Meta, but at least they can count to three.
  • @parkerortolani Parker Ortolani on x
It's hilarious to me that anyone thinks Meta has a serious leg up on Apple in the headset space. Apple's never first. But they almost always turn out to be the best. And just because it'll be expensive at launch, doesn't mean they won't work aggressively to get the price down.
  • @the_carlosdp Carlos DP on x
Let me tell ya, this + Apple's headset might actually be good enough at this point to start reaching mass market with the right apps... Especially since reports for both are that the passthrough is actually really good now https://twitter.com/...

Meta announces Quest 3 before WWDC: “they're just trying to get ahead of WWDC before Apple sucks all of the air out of the room” Meta announces Quest 3 after WWDC: “they should've announced before WWDC” Meta can't win in the PR department. Their only hope is a better product. htt…

Wearing a Quest 2 headset every week can be tough on your eyes and head, and I wear it ~35 hours a week 😱 So excited to hear that the Quest 3 will have a slimmer profile and improved comfort! #Quest3 #Meta https://twitter.com/...

The @MetaQuestVR 3 JUST got announced today. Earlier than their normal announcement timing. The Apple effect is REAL... - 40% slimmer - Lighter - Next-gen @Snapdragon XR chip - 128 GB for $499 - More details at Sept. 27th Event https://www.youtube.com/... [image]

  • @charlesarthur Charles Arthur on x
Always amazes me when people think an announcement means the product is on sale now. Meta is sacrificing sales now (why buy a Quest 2 now when a 3 is on the way? Classic bit of Osborneing) in the hope of not getting submerged by whatever Apple does. [image]
  • @boztank Boz on x
It's our first mass market device with Meta Reality, our custom solution that goes beyond mixed reality as we know it today. We expand on this with semantic understanding of the space and objects within so you can interact with this blended environment seamlessly [image]

Two interesting takeaways with Quest 3 launching at £499 and Quest 2 dropping (back) down to £299: 1. Quest now provides 3 price tiers (Q2 299, Q3 499, QPro 999) 2. Quest 3 is only £100 more than 2x Quest 2's. Will it actually be worth nearly 2x Quest 2's though?
  • @benz145 @benz145 on x
Looks like Quest 3 will indeed bring Quest Pro's great lenses which will be a big upgrade by itself, but they're also teasing their ‘highest resolution display yet’, so it could be an even bigger visual upgrade. https://twitter.com/...
  • @pavtalk Paul Katsen on x
Major news! Quest 3 is coming this year. It's a beefier machine that unlocks a new level of quality VR experiences. And its AR support is quite good - so you'll soon see popular VR experiences expand to more facets of your life. All for $499 from Meta. Exciting! https://twitter.c…

Quest 3 actually looks fantastic. I've had quite a few people say that they have tested/ have been testing it and they have amazing things to say about it. $499 seems like a good place to place it at. Particularly the passthrough and hand tracking.

Meta spoiler ahead of Monday... https://www.meta.com/...
  • @jetscott @jetscott on x
Meta dropping Quest 2 price back to $300 on June 4 ($350 for the 256GB version). That makes it a $200 jump to the Quest 3. Also, Meta promising a processing bump to Quest 2 and Quest Pro in a coming update - 26% CPU and 19% GPU possible increase for Quest 2? (??)
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
Very curious to try this and contrast with Apple's (first gen). $499 is aggressive, but still don't see that increasing volumes yet (market immature still). For Apple, they will need to get the price down to the $699-$899 range for it to have any chance at mass market volume. htt…
  • @tojiro Brandon Jones on x
This looks like a great upgrade over the Quest 2, and it's announcement is obviously timed to steal some of Apple's thunder, but the product it's really upstaging is the Quest Pro. Why spend twice as much for a slower processor and worse passthrough? https://www.youtube.com/...
  • @jetscott @jetscott on x
$499, new Qualcomm chip (as expected), smaller and lighter, depth sensor, color passthrough cameras, similar app catalog. Controllers are smaller with seemingly better haptics.
  • @jetscott @jetscott on x
Quest 3. The VR headsets are coming fast and furious now. https://www.cnet.com/...
  • @leogebbie Leo Gebbie on x
There we go: Quest 3 is official, and will be starting from $499 later this year. Heavy focus on passthrough mixed reality, which is increasingly table stakes for VR devices (and the exact direction Apple is expected to take with its headset) https://www.meta.com/...
  • @thrilluwu @thrilluwu on x
Quest 2 back to $299 starting June 4th with a huge performance upgrade. +25% CPU Perf. +19% GPU Speed. Added Dynamic Resolution Scaling *very nice*
  • @boztank Boz on x
And as I've said before, Quest 2 will continue to be in market as the easiest way to get into VR. We're increasing clock speeds for an up to 26% CPU and 19% GPU improvement in the next update. We're also lowering the prices—US$299.99 (128GB) and US$349.99 (256GB) starting June 4
  • @joannastern Joanna Stern on x
And Quest 2 is now back to $299.99!
