In a campaign called #BlockTheBlue, some Twitter users, including popular ones like @dril, are asking people to block anyone who subscribes to Twitter Blue
After Elon Musk removed legacy verified users' checkmarks, Twitter's biggest users are blocking everyone who pays.
Mashable Matt Binder
Context & Ripple Effects
Twitter’s removal of legacy checkmarks turned Blue from an optional subscription into the platform’s visible replacement for a long-standing status signal. The change followed the removal of legacy verification, making the badge newly salient to users who had previously treated it as an identity or credibility marker.
The backlash is compounded by reports that critics received unwanted Blue badges, blurring the line between a paid subscription and an endorsement of the product. #BlockTheBlue is therefore a social response to the meaning users attach to the badge, not merely to its price.
First-order effects
- Blue subscribers targeted by the campaign may lose access to influential users’ posts and conversations as blocks fragment their audience reach.
- Twitter’s paid badge becomes more reputationally charged: users deciding whether to subscribe must weigh platform features against possible community backlash.
Second-order effects
- Creators and brands that depend on broad interaction may have less incentive to display or purchase Blue if blocks reduce the audience value attached to the badge.
- Twitter must contend with a product-positioning problem: a verification replacement intended to support subscriptions can instead become a shorthand for platform allegiance among some users.
Third-order effects
- If badge-based social sorting persists, verification can shift from a trust signal into a partisan or community-status signal, reducing its usefulness as a common platform-wide identity layer.
- The episode illustrates the risk in monetizing formerly institutional platform signals: revenue features can alter social norms and provoke user-led countermeasures that the platform does not control.
The trend: Platforms are increasingly testing paid access to visibility and identity features, exposing those products to backlash when users see monetization as changing the social meaning of participation.

Goodbye, blue checkmark Though I don't really give a fuck You were a useful tool to prove to folks That I wasn't just some schmuck And it seems to me that Elon Musk It's making Twitter even worse Never knowing who to placate from the alt-rightiverse

That was fast: @twitter unverified the @USCPSC. Ridiculous, & embarrassing. (Also, hilarious: give this staffer a raise.) Every US government agency should be @verified through @Digital_Gov https://open.gsa.gov/... & have a label in April 2023. Unverifying US gov't is unwise. htt…

Twitter is a shit show now and not worth paying for in my opinion. I'm still here because I think it remains the best way to reach the most people and access the most information, but I'm tired of all the “HAHA 69% 420 YOLO!” decision making.

I will verify your Twitter profile if you send me $20 on Cash app and have a 15 second zoom in which I make you answer one inane and utterly unpredictable question with your face fully visible. For this, I will send you an individually numbered postcard. In the mail.

It is really funny that Elon Musk managed to destroy the value of the checkmark specifically so he could sell it. It now means absolutely nothing. It doesn't verify anything. It isn't notable. I'm honestly impressed he worked out how to delete the legacy ones too

Sort of true — Twitter has verified status built into tweets themselves, so when you search for legacy verified tweets, you only see old ones. (Congrats to @nmsonline for the final ever legacy verified tweet) https://twitter.com/search https://twitter.com/...
