Sidewalk began as Amazon's low-bandwidth, long-range wireless protocol, initially tested through a limited access-point deployment. Its reach later depended on Echo and Tile devices serving as Bluetooth bridges and on the default participation of Amazon-device owners in the mesh.

By January, Amazon had added four partners, including a solar-inverter use case, while signaling a developer opening. The SDKs and hardware kits turn that installed network from an Amazon-operated connectivity layer into a platform that outside device makers can build against.
