Amazon first unveiled Sidewalk at its 2019 hardware event, where it described a low-bandwidth, long-range protocol tested at 700 access points in Los Angeles with a dog tag as the planned first product. The missing piece was coverage: a neighborhood network needs radios everywhere, and Amazon doesn't sell access points to consumers.

This announcement supplies that piece by repurposing hardware people already own — Echo speakers and Tile trackers become Bluetooth bridges for the mesh.
