Sidewalk began as a low-bandwidth, long-range protocol tested through a 700-access-point Los Angeles trial, then Amazon positioned Echo and Tile hardware as Bluetooth bridges for the network. The June rollout turns that device footprint into a neighborhood-level network by default rather than an opt-in experiment.

Amazon had also brought Tile and Level into Sidewalk to extend its utility beyond Echo and Ring devices. The opt-out design matters because the network’s reach depends on participation from households that may not actively choose it.
