By October 2015 Google had already rebuilt the hardware and SDK side of Cardboard — the redesigned viewer for larger phones and cross-platform SDK landed that spring — but the ecosystem lacked a reason for ordinary users to look through the headset. This update supplies one: every photosphere already sitting in Street View becomes Cardboard-viewable content overnight, no new capture required.

It also sets up the capture side of the loop. Weeks later Google shipped Cardboard Camera for making 3D panoramas on Android, giving users a native way to create VR-ready images rather than just consume them — with the viewer installed base and the camera app as two halves of the same play.

  • Android users with a Cardboard viewer can immediately browse Street View's existing photosphere library in VR, converting years of user-captured panoramas into headset content at zero capture cost.
