NYC-based Reflection unveils Beam, an open model it says rivals GLM-5.2 on reasoning while using 3x-4x less compute and approaches Qwen3.8-Max on agentic tasks

Reflection AI, the startup billing itself as America's answer to open-source Chinese AI, is releasing its first model, called Beam.

Semafor

Context & Ripple Effects

Reflection AI emerged in 2025 with an autonomous-coding-agent ambition and early financing, then pursued far larger funding to build open foundation models. Beam is the company’s first public product expression of that strategy, following its emergence from stealth around coding agents and its push for multibillion-dollar backing.

The launch arrives amid reports that several Western open-weight releases were scheduled for October, making model efficiency—not merely an open release—the immediate point of comparison. Reflection’s performance and compute claims are company claims; independent benchmarking was still in progress.

First-order effects

  • Developers gain access to Reflection AI’s first open-weight model, Beam, while Reflection positions its claimed three- to fourfold compute advantage as a reason to evaluate it against Chinese open-weight alternatives.
  • Reflection moves from fundraising and agent-development plans to a model release that can be tested on reasoning and agentic workloads.

Second-order effects

  • Western open-weight developers preparing October launches face a sharper comparison on compute per unit of capability, not only benchmark rankings.
  • Chinese open-model leaders including the makers of Qwen3.8-Max gain a new US-based comparator for customers choosing between open-weight systems.

Third-order effects

  • If independent tests support the efficiency claim, frontier open-weight competition will increasingly reward models that lower the compute cost of reasoning and agentic deployment rather than simply maximize headline capability.
  • The wider effect would be to make access to efficient open weights a strategic differentiator for developers seeking alternatives to closed models and overseas open-model suppliers.

The trend: Open-weight AI competition is shifting toward reasoning and agent performance per unit of compute, with Western developers seeking credible alternatives to leading Chinese models.

AI is both foundational as a science and a technology, and the safest way that also ensures the benefits of AI are distributed evenly is by making it open.  I'm excited for what developers and scientists build and learn from this model, and for Beam to play a small part in ensuri…

Artificial Analysis has been given access by Reflection and is independently benchmarking Beam Early indicators suggest Beam will be one of the most token-efficient open models we've seen for its level of intelligence. Congratulations @reflection_ai on the announcement!
  • @jeremiahdillon Jeremiah Dillon on x
The models that bust the benchmarks aren't the models that drive the growth. Frontier closed models and flagship open-weight models top the capability charts, but the majority of token growth in the past 6 months has come from mid-sized open-weight models. Benchmark busters: Astr…

It finally happened America has entered the frontier open weights model competition. We aren't rolling over to China Reflection announced Beam, a 501B parameter open weights model that is comparable to GLM 5.2, Qwen 3.8, and Opus 4.8 Yes, Opus 4.8 on your desk You will need a dec…

congratulations to @reflection_ai on the launch of Beam. It is critical for the U.S. to have leading open models to win the AI race. I know @MishaLaskin and team have been working on this for a while and very excited to see them launch this.
  • @djlougen Daniel Lougen on x
So, my initial reaction to the benchmarks was meh. But, looking further it hadnt clicked with me just how good a model it is + the efficiency and size until realizing how much smaller it is. So, the full model is really good, and we can compress that intelligence and fit it on mo…

Wow! Congratulations to the Reflection team! Beam is now the first Western open-source agentic AI model competitive with Chinese models in a similar parameter range, and more efficient. Great to see open models expanding in the West too!

...This is why Reflection's Beam matters.  It has 501B total parameters but activates only 23B per token.  Reflection reports GLM-5.2-class reasoning on selected benchmarks at roughly one-quarter to one-third the estimated generation compute.  Open weights give developers another…

I think burning more RL compute to compress trajectories with length penalty is ≈straightforward if you have the compute. What makes me excited about Beam is that I presume it wasn't distilled at all. Time to see how competitive you can get without the taint of Claude.
