Valve says the Steam Frame is priced at $1,059 for the 256GB model and $1,299 for the 1TB version; both come with a copy of Half-Life: Alyx but no power supply

Context & Ripple Effects

Valve positioned the Steam Frame as a replacement for its discontinued high-end VR hardware when it unveiled the headset in 2025, projecting a 2026 launch below $999. The final pricing places it above that earlier ceiling while pairing the hardware with Half-Life: Alyx.

The launch follows Steam Deck OLED price increases tied to memory and storage costs and a $1,049 entry price for Valve's living-room Steam Machine. Valve's hardware range is therefore converging around four-figure starting prices rather than a low-cost PC-gaming alternative.

First-order effects

  • Steam Frame buyers face a $1,059 entry price for 256GB or $1,299 for 1TB, must provide their own power supply, and receive Half-Life: Alyx as part of the purchase.
  • Valve uses Half-Life: Alyx to make the higher-priced headset a hardware-and-software bundle, rather than charging new owners separately for a flagship title.

Second-order effects

  • At $10 above the base Steam Machine entry price, the 256GB Steam Frame forces buyers already considering Valve hardware to choose between similarly priced VR and living-room PC purchases.
  • The $240 step from 256GB to 1TB makes storage capacity a material upsell within Valve's VR lineup, echoing the storage-sensitive pricing pressure visible in the Steam Deck OLED changes.

Third-order effects

  • Valve's Steam Frame, Steam Machine, and repriced Steam Deck OLED point toward a consumer-hardware portfolio in which specialized PC-gaming devices begin at premium price bands.
  • If component-cost pressure persists, Valve's bundled first-party software becomes a more important way to defend premium hardware pricing without lowering the entry price.

The trend: Valve is moving its PC-gaming hardware toward premium, storage-tiered pricing while using its software catalog to strengthen the value proposition.

I had a lot of fun playing with the steam frame, especially Half-Life Alyx Standalone but you want to know something insane... I got Half-Life Alyx running Standalone on the Quest 3... Still needs a lot of optimization and a lot of work but watch out later this week for more info…

I'm extremely happy to say I was on the team that shipped Steam Frame! I mainly worked on controllers (LED layout, tracking/ML, rendermodels and button animations), factory calibration (去中国4次!), and solved a bunch of random problems during development and production.

BREAKING: Steam Frame has been launched! The price starts from $1,059/€1,049 and it comes with a standalone build of Half-Life: Alyx! At this price, I think it will be mostly targeting prosumers and enthusiasts, so it won't completely change the VR landscape. But it is still goin…

I can FINALLY talk about Steam Frame! I've been lucky enough to have it here for the past few weeks. While not perfect, it is truly an awesome device in some unexpected ways. I'll be posting about it throughout the week and my initial review will be up later today on Youtube.

Steam Frame out of your budget? Why not get a PS VR2? With Toolkit, you can unlock eye tracking on PC, better controller tracking, headset vibration and so so much more. Not to mention, the PS VR2 has beautiful high-brightness 2000x2040 per-eye OLED displays, wide FOV. 1/2

despite my hate of meta, i'm keeping the quest 3 for now. it's really sad that valve ended up being a hostage in this situation, but as a consumer, it just doesn't make sense for me to buy the steam frame...

Extremely disappointed with the Steam Frame. Device seems worse than the Meta Quest 3 in almost every single way aside from being able to wirelessly play PC games... but at double the price of a Quest 3, with worse battery life and controllers. This should not be $1059.99

@DevinOlsenn I mean... it's 2x the price of the years-old Quest 3 with similar standalone performance and display resolution.
