Valve unveils the Steam Frame, a VR headset that can stream games from a PC or run Windows and Android games locally, expected to launch in 2026 for under $999
Valve is about to launch a new virtual reality headset, and with it, a comprehensive new approach to what a VR device should be.
The Verge Jay Peters
Context & Ripple Effects
Valve’s VR path has moved from the early pairing of Steam Link and SteamVR to the 2019 Index, a premium PC-tethered headset. The Frame extends that arc by combining PC streaming with local software support rather than treating a desktop connection as the only way to use the device.
The launch also coincides with Valve ending production of the Index, making the Frame a product-line transition rather than an additional high-end PC VR option. Its sub-$999 target puts that transition near the price tier occupied by Bigscreen’s PC-powered Beyond headset.
First-order effects
- Valve is replacing its discontinued Index-era hardware position with a headset designed to operate both as a PC-streamed device and as a local-computing platform.
- Prospective buyers will have one Valve headset that can address PC streaming as well as locally run Windows and Android games, subject to its planned 2026 launch and stated price target.
Second-order effects
- PC-tethered VR makers will face a Valve alternative that competes on usage flexibility, not solely display, tracking, or headset weight.
- Developers and game distributors serving Windows or Android gain a potential additional headset endpoint, though the announcement does not establish which existing titles will be supported or optimized for VR.
Third-order effects
- If this model is adopted, VR hardware could shift from a split between PC-dependent and standalone devices toward hybrid endpoints that use both local execution and streamed PC performance.
- That shift would make platform compatibility and software libraries more central to headset competition, while leaving open whether consumers value the added flexibility enough to sustain the category’s premium price tier.
The trend: Steam Frame is one data point in VR’s move toward hybrid headsets that combine standalone computing with access to higher-powered PCs.

Steam Frame is an excellent headset for wirelessly playing PC VR games. But I'm extremely skeptical of the idea that it's the ideal headset for playing flatscreen games. https://www.uploadvr.com/...

As someone who has basically every headset...this seems like the perfect headset. PC VR is truly the best VR by a mile. And Steam Frame is a VR PC. And it's wireless! Add that it doubles as a Steam Deck with a portable giant screen? This'll be hard for anyone to beat.

This is indeed misleading. It's the experience people expect, in the age of Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, but it's not what Steam Frame offers. That the marketing person here knows it's what people want says a lot.

So Quest 3 with eye tracking but without OLED and zero first-party games. Another headset without AAA VR games. I'm already waiting for ambassadors and influencers to make sad videos that this headset is dead, just like they treated PSVR2 for the last 2 years 😆

When Meta, Apple, Google, and now Valve are all competing for our attention when just a couple years ago Meta had a veritable monopoly on the consumer space, the industry is in a very very good place.

I'm glad Steam Frame is finally out of the bag. However, I'm a lot less excited than I thought I'd be. On looks alone, they did a nice job. It looks comfort-first, too. For < $600 USD, I'd be interested. Funnily enough, it's basically the original Oculus headset mock-up. 🤓
