Review: GPT-6 Astra can adeptly use tools like Unreal Engine to build complex environments, such as a civilization with Unreal's autonomous MetaHuman characters
Everyday work, ambitious experiments, and the Manager Loop. … For nearly a year, OpenAI models were my unquestioned default …
Something Big Is Happening Matt Shumer
Context & Ripple Effects
GPT-6 Astra’s launch is paired with a broader product claim: OpenAI has positioned it as a computer-use model tested on multi-step online tasks, then made it available across ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API for specified paid tiers. That distribution gives tool-use demonstrations a path into production workflows rather than leaving them as isolated model demos.
Unreal Engine’s expanding accessibility had already supported smaller development teams pursuing indie and small-studio work. The review’s Unreal and MetaHuman examples put Astra’s value proposition at the asset-and-environment-production layer, where a model can operate inside an established creation tool.
First-order effects
- ChatGPT Work, Codex and API customers gaining Astra access can use it to execute work within Unreal Engine, lowering the hands-on tool-operation burden for environment-building experiments.
- Unreal Engine and MetaHuman users gain a new interface layer for directing complex scene work; public early-access reactions describe 3D reconstruction and house-modeling results, though those accounts are anecdotal.
Second-order effects
- Small studios using Unreal Engine can reallocate effort from repetitive scene assembly toward creative direction and review, extending the tool accessibility that has made smaller-team production more viable.
- OpenAI’s rollout across workplace and developer products makes its tool-use capability a workflow feature, raising pressure on AI rivals to demonstrate reliable operation inside professional software rather than only text or image output.
Third-order effects
- If models reliably operate specialist creation software, the competitive unit shifts from standalone generative output to supervised, end-to-end task execution inside existing toolchains.
- Game-development tooling may become more layered: engines and digital-human systems remain the production substrate, while AI providers compete to become the operator that translates intent into actions.
The trend: AI models are moving from generating individual creative assets toward operating the professional software used to assemble complete digital environments.

GPT-6 Astra represents a step-function change in model capability for interactive reasoning problems. It scores 66% on ARC-AGI-3 using our standard harness, and nearly 100% with a continuous conversation harness and custom compaction, at a cost of roughly $360 per game. In fact, …

GPT-6 Astra is state-of-the-art on FrontierMath Tier 4, ARC-AGI 3, and TerminalBench-4.0. GPT-6 Astra is also a major advance for scientific discovery, with state-of-the-art performance on Terminal-Bench Science 0.1 and HealthBench Pro.

GPT-6 Astra by @OpenAI achieves SOTA on ARC-AGI: - Astra scores 63% on ARC-AGI-3, 99% via a new provider adapter harness - It surpasses human performance on 96% of ARC-AGI-3 levels - It builds the most precise symbolic model of novel environments we've seen Our analysis:

Astra is useful for so many things, but I'm particularly excited to see how it transforms areas like entrepreneurship, scientific discovery, and how small teams tackle big problems.

goddamn... Astra absolutely nuked ARC-AGI-3 GPT-5.6 Sol (Max): 8% GPT-6 Astra (Max): 63% Astra + provider adapter: 98.6% even ignoring the 98.6% harness score, the jump from 8% to 63% on the standard setup is insane

GPT-6 Astra is the new SOTA on ARC-AGI-3 It's a qualitatively large leap towards AGI and the pace of progress is frankly surprising. That said, we lack evidence to call this AGI yet. While we are still studying the human capability gaps, we believe open-ended invention is unsolve…

Reflections on Astra from a benchmark perspective: 1. No harness was used in the making of these scores Up until this point we've seen multiple groups report results above 90% on ARC-AGI-3. Examples include PRO-LONG, Tycho, Schema, Prime Agent, see community leaderboard [1] for t…

Astra creates a dense compact symbolic world model to complete ARC-AGI-3 environments. For example, in environment s5i5, Astra: - Recorded the current level, hub orientation, and mechanism lengths: “L8: hub q2 (8↓). Lengths: 14=1...” - It mapped operations to exact controls:

most interesting gpt-6 post so far. it saturates ARC-AGI 3, which is something given that the previous best score was 30%. “we found it performing highly efficient, on-the-fly symbolic world modeling for each game and level.” — x.com/fchollet/sta... arcprize.org/blog/astra [i…

Not a typo! Lotta caveats here it seems, but even the 62.7 score is an insane leap forward. ARC-AGI-3 is uniquely difficult. arcprize.org/blog/astra [embedded post]

GPT-6 Astra is on the pareto-frontier of cost efficiency due to being EXTREMELY token efficient. It is in a whole league of it's own. It is cheaper than Gemini 3.8 Flash per task (a model 13x cheaper than Astra).

@cheatyyyy The way the cost curve bends backwards on Arc AGI blows my mind. The Max reasoning level is so much better at solving the problems quickly that it actually costs less than if you tried with a lower reasoning effort level

token pricing is effectively meaningless now. 3.8 flash looks 13x cheaper when measured per token, but Astra is cheaper per task since it's far more efficient. measure your costs per task, not per token.

This seems importantly wrong in the second paragraph. A monitor forcing you to not put some info in the CoT does not make the CoT useless to you. You can otherwise use the CoT for its usual purposes, without explicit reasoning about the misaligned part. Humans do this often.
