OpenAI updates the default model for free users to GPT-5.6 Luna, adds unlimited text chats for free users, rolls out an improved GPT-5.6 Sol version, and more

OpenAI on Thursday announced a series of changes that will upgrade ChatGPT for both paid and free users.

Axios Herb Scribner

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI had already signaled a broader-access strategy by planning unlimited GPT-5 use at a standard setting for free users and, later, extending ChatGPT Projects to the free tier. The new default-model and chat-limit changes make that access model more concrete.

The update also follows the broad GPT-5.6 release and ChatGPT Work launch, which expanded ChatGPT from a chat product toward a workspace that can draw context from apps and files.

First-order effects

  • Free ChatGPT users receive GPT-5.6 Luna as their default model and can continue text conversations without a stated usage cap.
  • OpenAI upgrades paid and free ChatGPT experiences in parallel, including an improved GPT-5.6 Sol version.

Second-order effects

  • Removing the free text-chat constraint makes model choice, rather than message scarcity, a more prominent way for OpenAI to differentiate ChatGPT experiences.
  • The change extends OpenAI’s earlier free-access commitments, raising the baseline that ChatGPT users can expect before considering paid plans or work-oriented tools.

Third-order effects

  • If OpenAI keeps moving capable models and workspace features into the free tier, ChatGPT’s product structure will increasingly depend on differentiated model experiences and workflow surfaces rather than simple feature gates.
  • That direction makes ChatGPT Work’s cross-app context gathering more strategically important: OpenAI is building both a broad consumer entry point and a more specialized work layer.

The trend: OpenAI is widening the free ChatGPT baseline while differentiating its assistant through model variants and increasingly workflow-native capabilities.

Giving free ChatGPT users access to reasoning (a ‘Think’ toggle) will have a broader impact on the world than every new paid model and coding agent combined. [image]

The biggest story in AI today should be that everyone can get unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna messages for free That's approximately Opus 4.6 level intelligence for free Intelligence too cheap to meter https://openai.com/... [image]

Oh big part is for free users, GPT 5.6 Luna is unlimited. No more usage limits for free users. Just for file uploads and whatnot. Given how good GPT 5.6 Luna is, that's pretty insane
