I'm personally very excited for Pause Point, which makes it easier to make decisions about my app usage in the moment (instead of way back whenever I set up app timers). https://blog.google/... [image]

So Google is building Android laptops now. Will its “premium” design get around the low-budget vibe of its browser-based Chromebooks, I wonder? https://blog.google/...

    “googlebook” unlimited resources, zero imagination

@Jason Three big things: 1) New tech stack: Android underpinnings (runs android apps natively; supports ARM silicon + x86) and therefore also great interop with your phone. 2) Premium hardware: What you expect from a high end laptop. 3) A new experience with Gemini integrated

“Googlebook” is an impressively bad name
  • @mweinbach Max Weinbach on x
What makes me concerned about Googlebook is your apps like Codex (post likely super app rebrand) and Claude Cowork can't run Electron apps are where most apps seem to be at and they don't work. Android just doesn't support it. Maybe codex because rust if you do a new front end

I sure hope that there's more than Android-ChromeOS on platform unity plus hover to search or this won't end well. OEMs are mum, too. There a lot of important platform work going on under the hood, but for a launch day, uninspiring. Getting rid of the Chromebook brand is a plus
  • @nexusben Ben Schoon on x
Just have to say it - “Googlebook” seems like a failure to understand what anyone wants to use a laptop for Google hasn't offered a single compelling use case for this new Android-based desktop platform yet. This seems like a product for no one... https://9to5google.com/...

I don't love the GoogleBook name, I think GeminiBook would've been way more evocative.
  • @mweinbach Max Weinbach on x
Googlebook! The name is... not good but better than anything I can think of. Coming later this year, it's Android for PCs basically (and replacing ChromeOS in the future) [image]
  • @mweinbach Max Weinbach on x
I'm struggling to see Googlebook as anything but an OS designed to replace Android tablets and Chromebooks That's likely what it is, but that also makes it not a competitor to Windows/Mac but iPad? I really hope they have Surface style systems coming

I think Google did a great job with The Android show this year. They're clearly trying to add personality and style to their execs and they're doing a great job with it. Additionally pretty much all of these updates are really great. Very big year for Android.
