Nvidia unveils DLSS 5, which uses a real-time neural rendering model to add photorealistic lighting to game frames, arriving this fall to RTX 50-series GPUs

At its GTC 2026 event, Nvidia has revealed the next generation of DLSS.  DLSS 5 isn't a frame-rate, frame generation or performance enhancing technology.

Digital Foundry Richard Leadbetter

Big moment. You can cross the uncanny valley in video games by using real-time video-to-video AI. You get the best of coherence & control from classical 3d engines, then use generative AI to take it all the way.

DLSS 5 looks like gen AI for video games. Grace looks totally different with DLSS 5 [image]

DLSS5 makes this look like an AI generated dating profile picture used to scam an old person in another country. Just looks like every other AI generated image of a “person.” No character or soul to it. Art loses what makes it impressive when it all looks like generated slop. [im…

The idea is cool, and I'm not against using AI like this, but here it feels a bit too much... the faces don't really look like the characters anymore.

Nvidia just announced DLSS 5, calling it the “most significant breakthrough in computer graphics” since the introduction of real-time ray tracing in 2018. DLSS 5 uses “real-time neural rendering” and is coming to RTX 50 series GPUs later this year https://www.nvidia.com/...
  • @synthpotato @synthpotato on x
@NVIDIAGeForce This looks horrifically bad, nobody wants an AI slop filter on top of their games
  • @synthpotato @synthpotato on x
@digitalfoundry They cannot be serious, this is just an AI slop filter on top of the game

Announcing NVIDIA DLSS 5, an AI-powered breakthrough in visual fidelity for games, coming this fall. DLSS 5 infuses pixels with photorealistic lighting and materials, bridging the gap between rendering and reality. Learn More → https://www.nvidia.com/... [video]

NVIDIA just announced DLSS 5, which seems to generate AI images on top of upscaling, rather than just upscale what is already there as per all previous DLSS versions and this looks... not good. It is heavily leaning into AI slop, Grace looks like a completely different person. [i…

I mean DLSS 5 is insane for lighting, imagine if DLSS 6 handles movement/motion mixed with it. You could probably have photo realistic lighting, motion, audio, etc in real time with it. The entire game becomes the quality of cut scenes.
  • @geforce_jacobf Jacob Freeman on x
DLSS 5 applies to the entire scene in real-time, with existing textures and models, making the materials, lighting, faces look so much more real. 👀 [image]
  • @videotechuk_ Ben on x
Urm NVIDIA? This looks awful [image]
  • @geforce_jacobf Jacob Freeman on x
DLSS 5 is completely mind blowing. The neural rendering model with photoreal lighting and materials is a generation step up in visual fidelity. Gaming with DLSS 5 feels like future tech, but its possible now. It is truly incredible. 🤯 [video]
  • @mrbenb Ben Berraondo on x
Many thought a next-gen jump wouldn't happen for gaming again. Must watch video to see how games are going to look Great job by the @digitalfoundry team!
  • @ctnzr Bryan Catanzaro on x
So proud of DLSS5: Fully generative neural rendering, in real-time, in real games. Mind-blowing realism. A whole new generation of real-time graphics. A decade of continuous research and development. Coming soon to PCs everywhere. 💚 [image]

Nvidia has rolled out DLSS 5 and holy jumping fucking shitballs does it make everything look terrible.  It runs every NPC through the same shitty uncanny valley filter that AI imagery cannot escape.  —  It is the “I fixed [insert female character]” meme made real and, inexplicabl…
