An OpenAI researcher who helped shape how models were built and priced says she quit after two years due to “deep reservations” about ads and OpenAI's strategy

This week, OpenAI started testing ads on ChatGPT.  I also resigned from the company after spending two years …

grateful some folks are being candid about what's happening in these companies after they've lost ethics debates internally, but yikes.

I resigned from OpenAI on Monday. The same day, they started testing ads in ChatGPT. OpenAI has the most detailed record of private human thought ever assembled. Can we trust them to resist the tidal forces pushing them to abuse it? I wrote about better options for @nytopinion [i…

I've never seen so many technologists state their concerns so strongly, frequently and with such concern as I have with AI It's happening FASTER and WITH GREATER IMPACT than anyone anticipated IT'S RECURSIVE IT'S ACCELERATING

@zhitzig @nytopinion the broadband fund doesn't work, and the article seems to making a circular argument - chatgpt already optimizes for engagement (caveated against many safety and other guardrails), but ads could be a gateway to optimizing engagement?

Another resignation “OpenAI has the most detailed record of private human thought ever assembled. Can we trust them to resist the tidal forces pushing them to abuse it?” “The company is building an economic engine that creates strong incentives to override its own rules.”

On OpenAI's current principles for ChatGPT ads: “I believe the first iteration of ads will probably follow those principles. But I'm worried subsequent iterations won't, because the company is building an economic engine that creates strong incentives to override its own rules.”

Kudos to OpenAI for updating their policies such that an employee can resign and raise their concerns fully in as public a format as the NYT without being worried about being bound by confidentiality and nondisparagement agreements.  I think other companies should follow their ex…

This highlights—amongst many other things—that we quickly need to strengthen the laws governing access to the records that tech companies have on us and store for us, both by government and others.  A shame Congress doesn't legislate anymore; CalECPA could be a good model here.

“ChatGPT users have generated an archive of human candor that has no precedent... Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don't have the tools to understand...”
  • @camrobjones Cameron Jones on x
Totally agree with @zhitzig in NYT today: funding chat models through ads creates powerful incentives to exploit very private user data and manipulate users. V bad news for users, OpenAI, and AI services more broadly (cf Facebook, the web more broadly) https://www.nytimes.com/...

“I once believed I could help the people building A.I. get ahead of the problems it would create. This week confirmed my slow realization that OpenAI seems to have stopped asking the questions I'd joined to help answer.” - OpenAI researcher who just resigned

the more i think about openai, the more it is becoming meta (slop) which isn't surprising considering how many ex-meta ppl there it's like a cancer metastasizing, destroying everything in its wake

I dont mean to be rude but i feel like this article says very little. i think everyone will agree 1) data privacy is good 2) tech companies have a bad track record of resisting their incentives to misuse this data . you kind of vaguely gesture towards certain kinds of oversight (…

In Jan OpenAI fired VP of public policy (safety) for discrimination against a male colleague.  There are no details about the alleged complaint but she had raised concerns about the ChatGPT's proposed adult mode and was vocal that co wasn't doing enough to stop CSAM.  She also le…

“But we still have time to work them out to avoid the two outcomes I fear most: a technology that manipulates the people who use it at no cost, and one that exclusively benefits the few who can afford to use it.”  - former OpenAI researcher Zoë Hitzig.
