grateful some folks are being candid about what's happening in these companies after they've lost ethics debates internally, but yikes.

@zhitzig @nytopinion the broadband fund doesn't work, and the article seems to making a circular argument - chatgpt already optimizes for engagement (caveated against many safety and other guardrails), but ads could be a gateway to optimizing engagement?

Another resignation “OpenAI has the most detailed record of private human thought ever assembled. Can we trust them to resist the tidal forces pushing them to abuse it?” “The company is building an economic engine that creates strong incentives to override its own rules.”

On OpenAI's current principles for ChatGPT ads: “I believe the first iteration of ads will probably follow those principles. But I'm worried subsequent iterations won't, because the company is building an economic engine that creates strong incentives to override its own rules.”

This highlights—amongst many other things—that we quickly need to strengthen the laws governing access to the records that tech companies have on us and store for us, both by government and others. A shame Congress doesn't legislate anymore; CalECPA could be a good model here.

Totally agree with @zhitzig in NYT today: funding chat models through ads creates powerful incentives to exploit very private user data and manipulate users. V bad news for users, OpenAI, and AI services more broadly (cf Facebook, the web more broadly) https://www.nytimes.com/...
