Sources: OpenAI is prioritizing ChatGPT over long-term research, prompting senior staff departures; Sora and DALL-E teams felt neglected and under resourced
The immediate significance is not simply a product roadmap choice: sources describe the allocation decision as affecting senior talent retention and the teams behind Sora and DALL-E, two distinct creative-AI efforts.
First-order effects
OpenAI’s ChatGPT emphasis reportedly redirects management attention and resources away from long-term research and the Sora and DALL-E teams.
Senior staff departures can weaken continuity in the affected research and creative-product groups while intensifying pressure on remaining leaders to prioritize ChatGPT work.
Second-order effects
Retention and recruiting become more consequential for OpenAI’s non-ChatGPT teams; competitors can target researchers and product leaders who see fewer internal resources or advancement paths.
A narrower allocation of people and compute may slow iteration across Sora and DALL-E relative to ChatGPT, concentrating OpenAI’s near-term product execution around its flagship interface.
Third-order effects
If sustained, this would make OpenAI more resemble a frontier lab organized around a dominant commercial product, with long-horizon research competing directly for resources rather than operating as a protected core function.
The case illustrates how capital-intensive AI development turns internal capacity allocation into a strategic constraint: firms must continually balance revenue-generating deployment against research breadth and talent retention.
The trend: Frontier AI labs are institutionalizing around flagship products, forcing sharper trade-offs between commercialization, research autonomy, and scarce technical talent.
@FT Good people are rightfully sick and tired of the deceit and abuses perpetrated by the bad actors at OpenAI Staff members with a conscience and ethics are increasingly waking up and realizing they can't be associated with a corrupted company, and that staying there too long
More rats abandoning a sinking ship of “Open"AI Most good people already left a long time ago and/or were forced out, like Ilya Sutskever, Mira Murati, John Schulman, etc Then there's that other one... Sam Altman and the worst people at OpenAI perfidiously killing gpt4o, after
Everyone's obsessing over whether OpenAI has the best model,". “That's the wrong question. They're converting technical leadership into platform lock-in. The moat has shifted from research to user behaviour, and that's a much stickier advantage.” https://www.ft.com/...
Every ~6 months I hear people claim @OpenAI isn't doing real research and is just incrementally improving ChatGPT. I even heard it right before 🍓/o1. In my opinion @OpenAI is the best frontier lab to do research at today. Building an AI research intern in 2026 is not hype.
How does OpenAI balance long-term research bets with product-forward research fundamentals? I've been getting this question a lot lately, usually framed as a suggestion that Jakub (@merettm) and I are pushing an increasingly product-focused agenda. That characterization is
anyone that believes openai has given up on fundamental research and is simply productmaxxing has not internalized this chart my sweet summer child; Sora was like a 5 person side project. Deep research. Even initially Codex was 2 side projects (scaled up now ofc). we always [imag…
