Incredible they are not even going to tell us what other ByteDance apps new TikTok US owns. Here's the list of the ByteDance apps Apple banned from the App Store in January 2024 when the ban took effect. https://newsroom.tiktok.com/ ... https://techcrunch.com/... [image]

If true, and this is the Jan 22nd deadline where the illegal non-enforcement ban expires, then hopefully we'll get some answers to questions about the TikTok deal and if it even complies with the law that I raised in my December @amprog piece. https://www.americanprogress.org/ ..…

We finally have details on the investors in the U.S. TikTok: ByteDance 19.9%, SilverLake 15%, Oracle 15%, MGX 15%, all other investors combined: 35.1% So after years of negotiating a divestment deal, the largest investor in the new U.S. TikTok is...ByteDance. Seems not ideal.

China is outlawed from having an “operational relationship” w TikTok, but the finalized deal keeps ByteDance a minority investor & lets them own the algorithm.  Far from a clean break from China.  —  What it DOES do is hand Larry Ellison's Oracle, the Emiratis and Silver Lake eno…

“Mr. Trump formally delayed the enforcement of the law several times after he took office again last January” is an interesting way of saying Trump manifestly broke the law by possible any reading of it.  —  Minor compared to his other crimes, but still.

“ByteDance will keep TikTok's coveted algorithm, which it will license to the new U.S. entity.  —  “That arrangement may fall short of the 2024 law, which required the divestment to end any ‘operational relationship’ between ByteDance and TikTok in the United States”

Licensing is not ownership and monitoring is not control. As long as ByteDance retains the ability to alter the algorithm from Beijing, the CCP will preserve one of its most powerful tools for influencing American minds and waging psychological warfare against the West. The

The Trump administration has given its blessing to a deal that allows ByteDance to keep 19.9 percent of the company, keeps the new U.S. entity run by a longtime TikTok senior executive, and that will “retrain the algorithm on U.S. data.” This is a complete violation of the law
