Epic Games acquires Sketchfab, which operates a repository with 4M+ 3D assets, for an undisclosed sum; Sketchfab reduces its store commission from 30% to 12%

TechCrunch Romain Dillet

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the third marketplace Epic has bought in three years, after Houseparty in 2019 and Bandcamp earlier in 2021 — but Sketchfab is the first where Epic moved on price on day one, cutting the store commission from 30% to 12%. That number is not incidental: it matches what Epic charges developers who self-publish to the Epic Games Store.

The acquisition also gives Epic something Fortnite and Unreal alone could not: a library of over 4 million ready-made 3D assets sitting between Unreal Engine users and the metaverse content they will need. Three years later that inventory became the backbone of Fab, Epic's unified asset marketplace launched at the same 88/12 split.

First-order effects

  • Sketchfab's sellers see their take-home jump from 70% to 88% immediately, making it the cheapest major place to sell 3D assets overnight.
  • Epic converts a passive content repository into a creator funnel priced directly against incumbent asset stores' 30% norms.

Second-order effects

  • Rival asset marketplaces now face an awkward choice: match the 12% take rate and reprice their entire business, or watch 3D creators route around them.
  • The move sets a template for how Epic treats each acquired community — Bandcamp was kept standalone, but if Sketchfab's economics migrate to Fab, acquired-marketplace pricing becomes Epic's wedge into every content vertical.

Third-order effects

  • If the 12% rate keeps propagating across Epic's storefronts, marketplace commissions shift from an industry default to a competitive lever — pressuring every platform that funds itself on a 30% cut of digital goods.
  • Owning both the engine (Unreal) and the dominant 3D asset supply positions Epic to tax the metaverse content layer itself rather than compete for any single store's shelf space.

The trend: Digital marketplaces are entering a take-rate war, with Epic systematically acquiring communities and repricing them at 12% to force incumbents off the 30% standard.

Ah, well. I guess that it was too much to hope that Sketchfab would remain independent. I'm a fan of the team and I hope that they did well in the deal.

@slukas @TrevorFSmith Facebook also said Oculus would remain independent. I'm not saying this will happen here, but ultimately Epic's business goals will likely take precedence over Sketchfab's goals. Hopefully there is enough overlap in their mutual visions of an open & intercon…

@kentbye @TrevorFSmith If this is the real concern then I recommend spending a lot more time looking at Epic's track record of acquisitions (as well as their megagrant recipients) which should have more relevant data points than a single acquisition from a different company that …

Sketchfab is one of a handful of companies I expected to get acquired by a platform giant. And indeed that's what happened, but not one of the “platform giants” I expected. https://twitter.com/...

I don't know what the end game is, but this is interesting! Epic now owns both Art Station and Sketchfab, & has heavily invested in Blender. They are really bullish on 3D artists and creators and want those types of people in their ecosystem I guess? Anyways, this is cool! https:…

Super proud of @Sketchfab's Team for joining @EpicGames, congrats @trigrou, @pierreant_p and @albn for a well deserved achievement. I'm glad that we will continue together our work, but from Epic now :) And Rendering Engineer at Epic sounds nice :)

Happy for Sketchfab At the same time weird to have all the gameart stuff now be owned by megacorps (e.g. recent acquisitions of Artstation, Substance, Sketchfab). Only Marmoset missing 😅 https://twitter.com/...

Huge congratulations to all @Sketchfab as they join Epic in a 9-figure M&A deal. One of the pleasures of working in venture is partnering with people truly passionate about their industry. That was evident from our first meeting with @albn (1/n) https://www.epicgames.com/...
