A report details Apple's AR/VR headset: a ~$3,000 price tag, Sony Micro OLED displays, manufacturer Pegatron assembled thousands of prototypes in 2022, and more

MacRumors Hartley Charlton

Context & Ripple Effects

Earlier coverage had already converged on a premium Apple mixed-reality device: a 2021 report described a $3,000-plus headset with advanced displays and tracking, while a 2022 account added high-end processing and prescription-lens support. This report makes that program more concrete by naming the display and assembly partners and placing prototype work in 2022.

The price is central to the product’s market position, not merely a component-cost detail. Later reporting on internal concerns about the headset’s price and utility underscores the challenge of translating technically ambitious hardware into a compelling use case.

First-order effects

  • Sony Micro and Pegatron become the component and manufacturing partners most closely associated with Apple’s reported headset program, with Pegatron’s prototype work signaling that the effort had moved beyond an early concept stage.
  • A roughly $3,000 price positions Apple’s reported device as a premium product, narrowing its initial buyer base relative to lower-cost consumer hardware.

Second-order effects

  • Apple must justify premium pricing through the reported mix of AR, VR, hand and eye tracking, and Mac-display functions, rather than relying on headset novelty alone.
  • Sony Micro’s specialized display role and Pegatron’s prototype assembly work concentrate early execution risk in a small supplier chain, making component readiness central to Apple’s product timing and quality.

Third-order effects

  • If premium mixed-reality devices gain traction, the market is likely to reward suppliers able to deliver specialized displays and manufacturers able to assemble complex wearable hardware, rather than favoring headset makers on price alone.
  • The reported pricing and employee concerns point to a broader test for AR/VR: whether high-end devices can establish durable utility before scale lowers their cost structure.

The trend: Mixed reality is developing first as a high-specification, supplier-intensive premium category, with practical utility determining whether it can move beyond early adopters.

    The battery pack is the billion-dollar question facing Apple's (almost-here!) mixed-reality headset. https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

Seems even Apple has to make serious trade-offs. 2-hour battery life (Quest Pro got destroyed for that in most reviews) & external waist-mounted battery pack. Note how we're now even talking about “$3,000 or more”. + the usual walled garden (only RealityKit for now), only AirPods…

Assuming this is directionally true, it just shows how far this tech is from being mass market. I still don't believe we see it this year but I want to be wrong. https://twitter.com/...

Apple Mixed Reality headset was supposed to launch last year but now set for 2023 (image above is a rendering based on leaks). Jony Ive pushed for the battery to be in the waist belt (connected via cord) instead of battery built into headset. 🔗 https://www.macrumors.com/... https…

Not that I'm an apple customer in the first place, but seeing that the only option for this this is airpods is saddening. As someone prone to ear infections I can't use any in-ear hardware. Fun to find another axis of being excluded from future shit. https://twitter.com/...

https://www.macrumors.com/... Much hubbub over the latest Apple rumours. What it confirms are private rumblings re: Apple's begrudging/late support of VR due to compounding uncertainties surrounding MR/AR utility. VR is a weathered/profit positive industry, MR/AR...has a long way…

Reading this list of features, you can't help but notice it's a big list of features that exist in other products, glued together in a new format. https://www.macrumors.com/...

Apple's mixed-reality headset will have: ▫️a physical dial for switching between VR and real-world ▫️a waist-mounted battery pack that is connected via power cable (2-hr life) ▫️More than a dozen cameras and sensors Estimated cost of ~$3000. https://twitter.com/...

New report details Apple's AR/VR headset: with a ~$3,000 price tag, a waist-mounted battery pack (lasting 2 hours), a physical dial for switching between VR and real-world, + more than a dozen cameras and sensors...all eyes are also on the software.👀 https://www.macrumors.com/...

we waited 5 years for *this*?! no way it really has a wired battery pack that you wear on your waist. hope this is all false https://www.macrumors.com/... https://twitter.com/...

“ - waist mounted battery w/magnetic power cable ” I know Apple was the ‘king of cool’ for awhile in the 2000's, but I can't see any way they can reconcile just how goofy this will look. All the sleek design in the world can't save you from how dorky this will be https://twitter.…

Waist mounted battery packs you can swap out cause the battery life is only 2 hours 🤣 At $3K do you really imagine Apple releasing something even remotely like this? https://twitter.com/...

If these are the best use case scenarios Apple can come up with, this sounds like a flop. Videoconferencing? Maps over a table? https://twitter.com/...
  • @reedalbergotti Reed Albergotti on x
@MattRosoff Yeah, great scoop, but sounds like Apple would be best to shelve its VR efforts until the tech is there. Custom prescriptions inserts and waist-mounted battery packs sounds eerily Magic Leap-esque and this device sounds even less ambitious.

Reading these specs, it becomes clear that it's no more possible to judge Apple's mixed-reality headset based solely on specs than it would have been to understand the first iPhone without knowing anything about its software. https://www.macrumors.com/...

Question the reliability of a few statements here, but overall great overview and good read. Includes new info that fits a few predictions from my long Apple thread. Like the ability to run iOS apps in 2D mode. My guess is you'll be able to turn any surface into a touchscreen. ht…

The most shocking thing I learned while reporting on Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset is its external battery pack connected by cable instead of one integrated into its headband. Check out my roundup of the headset's features for @theinformation https://www.theinformation.c…

Paywall rumors, believable though. Few key details: - 120° fov - can run 2D iOS apps - waist mounted battery w/magnetic power cable - 2 hour battery life Will be interesting if Apple moves forward with a cable for their first mixed reality headset. https://www.macrumors.com/...
