New: I've seen internal Apple renders of its mixed reality headset. It's a sleek, curved visor with swappable headbands and over a dozen cameras. Artist mockup of the renders: https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

Boom! The landmark Apple Visor patent has just been submitted to the US Patent office. MONITORING A USER OF A HEAD-WEARABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE This includes a new Chin interface. New report to clients and soon https://readmultiplex.com/ members! https://appft.uspto.gov/... https:/…

Other details about Apple's headset, which it hopes to ship next year: - has discussed pricing it at $3,000 - working on thimble-like device for your finger to help control it - has advanced eye tracking

Following rumors about @Apple's pricing for a future headset? A couple of notes: 1) It's all conjecture until it's released. 2) If priced at $3k, it's NOT for the “consumer market” and can't be compared to an @oculus #Quest, 3) It will change everything. https://www.macrumors.com…
  • @jasminezroberts Jasmine Roberts on x
as someone who studied optical waveguides and electrical engineering in undergrad: am caring less about the form factor of #ar #vr headsets and more about content and distribution frameworks. hardware engineers do what they need to do but i don't need another $3k paperweight. htt…

@bhansmeyer Apple's first foray into this space is going to be a bigger and heavier device that goes after TV. That comes in 2022. Glasses in 2023. Glasses will be heavily focused on utility. The first device will be aimed at media usage in your living room. TV killer.

These reports are getting lazy... we talked about this years ago https://www.youtube.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @anshelsag Anshel Sag on x
@raywongy I think it's the only way that someone will be able to develop in XR for Apple in a spatial environment until the AR glasses come out. Which could still be years away. It's a new market and requires new tools and development.
  • @rengle820 Ryan Engle on x
Specs sound awesome and as someone in the space I'll buy it at pretty much any price, but I really don't understand the $3K price target coming from Apple... I guess they market it as a full on computer replacement? M1 powered, work station, Mac Pro level for creators? https://tw…
  • @anshelsag Anshel Sag on x
The Apple #VR headset will be very powerful and has all the bells and whistles, at $3K it really looks like they spared no expense. A device for creators & developers, not consumers. This is what I expect developers will use to build apps for #AR as well. https://www.theinformati…

@kenswain @Jason @elonmusk Apple is coming with a $40 billion product that Steve Jobs dreamed up as a way to kill TV. If I told you that is the plot will you agree that it is true or would you think I am a lunatic?
  • @greengart Avi Greengart on x
The key will be what Apple expects you to do with it. At 10x the price of Oculus Quest 2, I'm guessing “play Beat Saber” isn't the primary use case. https://twitter.com/...

That is an Apple Watch band on a pair of Oakley ski goggles https://twitter.com/...
  • @jank0 Janko Roettgers on x
Didn't realize they hired Rony Abovitz to make their product forecasts now.
  • @gregnibler Greg Nibler on x
This would be such an Apple thing to do. https://twitter.com/...
  • @caitlin__kelly Caitlin Kelly on x
i'm getting incredible “minions” vibes here https://twitter.com/...
  • @parkerortolani Parker Ortolani on x
This drawing of the design feels quite realistic to me. The band is clearly based on the Apple Watch Sport band if it were mixed with the double cuff. The design of the front area over your eyes with the top mounted button is reminiscent of AirPods Max. https://9to5mac.com/...
  • @scobleizer @scobleizer on x
These are Oakley's smart ski goggles from years ago (there is a little computer and screen inside). Thanks @jasteinerman for reminding me that this Apple render looks very similar. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @anshelsag Anshel Sag on x
@raywongy I have many thoughts about this. I think the primary thing to consider is that VR is a very good onramp for developing for and building immersive apps. Smartphones are great, but they only get you so far. I believe that these devices will be targeted towards enterprise …
  • @raywongy @raywongy on x
I really hope Apple knows what it's doing and isn't putting the cart before the horse Gonna need some really good reasons to invest $3,000 in a headset... unless it's for devs/enterprise which would be so weird for Apple https://www.inputmag.com/...
  • @bzamayo Benjamin Mayo on x
More seriously, everyone (including Apple obviously) knows that a $3k headset is not going to sell in high volumes. I guess Apple figured the way into this market is through specialised use cases in industry, before technology can miniaturise down into something consumer focused.
  • @glenngabe Glenn Gabe on x
If they can't overcome the motion sickness problem (and no company has yet), I'm not sure this will do well -> Apple is planning a $3,000+ mixed-reality headset w/8K displays, eye-tracking tech, & 12+ cameras to track hand movements & show the real world https://www.theverge.com/…
  • @floppyadult @floppyadult on x

  • @gavinpurcell Gavin Purcell on x
honestly i can see this making sense if essentially it's seen as a super high-rez, high end monitor but it better be the most comfortable VR headset of all time https://twitter.com/...
  • @kahjahkins @kahjahkins on x
The Pimax headset is $1300. I wonder what the bells and whistles here are supposed to do. https://twitter.com/...
  • @yoda Drew Olanoff on x
nothing like publicly testing price points. $3k ain't it, @tim_cook. https://twitter.com/...
  • @patrickklepek Patrick Klepek on x
Apple is not usually the company that dumps expensive R&D projects onto the public. Very strange. Who is this for? https://twitter.com/...
  • @loh Elliot on x
$3K sounds like a lot, but 8K displays and iPhone-level performance would be better than the CPU and monitor setup I have now. I still say that a sufficiently powerful headset can emulate and replace any prior computing paradigm https://twitter.com/...
  • @kylebrussell Kyle Russell on x
Me in 2016: VR's only going to get cheaper from here! Me in 2021: I'm going to drop $3K on Apple's headset and then $12K so I can have two 8K cameras to shoot stereoscopic footage for its crazy display

If this drawing by ⁦@theinformation⁩ of a possible new mixed-reality headset from ⁦@Apple⁩ is even close to correct, it would be the ugliest, clumsiest product from the company since its first laptop in 1989, IMO. Information piece is at https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https:…

looks like my snowboarding goggles https://twitter.com/...
  • @lucasmtny Lucas Matney on x
One of the most interesting things about this is the lack on physical controllers, meaning nil compatibility with all at/vr gaming content out there rn. Thinking about how few devs customized content for $1K Valve Index features, how many will redesign experiences for a $3K hmd? …

The concept of a VR headset whose headstraps are as comfy and well-designed as the Apple Watch bands is extremely compelling, ngl https://twitter.com/...
  • @lauramandaro Laura Mandaro on x
Apple is planning a high-priced mixed-reality headset and @alexeheath & @waynema have a LOT of details. Wearing a headset for work always seemed migraine- inducing but maybe there's hope: https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...
  • @dylanmcd8 @dylanmcd8 on x
Apple really said “Watch + AirPods Max” https://twitter.com/...
  • @lanceulanoff Lance Ulanoff on x
At this price point and with the mixed-reality chops, this would be Apple's answer to Microsoft Hololens, which is essentially an enterprise product. https://twitter.com/...
  • @jank0 Janko Roettgers on x
Apple thinks it can sell 250,000 $3000 XR headsets per year 😶 https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

I don't know, I'd already be happy with a MacBook that can properly monitor a 4k external monitor without having to worry if I connect it on the left or right USB-C port. https://twitter.com/...
  • @kylebrussell Kyle Russell on x
Of course, by 2026 Apple will have 6K cameras with wide lenses (simulated lenses via ML?) on both ends of the back side of the device so anyone can shoot stereoscopic footage for the headset
  • @cityofthetown Tom Dotan on x
Great scoop from @alexeheath and @waynema about Apple's secret AR plans. But also, sorry, if someone came to Steve Jobs with this prototype he'd burst into tears and do an Odwalla hunger strike. https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

🍎🥽New: @alexeheath⁩ saw images of the planned Apple VR device & shows you what he saw in this piece, plus a slew of specs & other details he & ⁦@waynema⁩ picked up. How many of you think you'd pay $3,000 for an Apple VR device? https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
  • @jetscott Scott Stein on x
Curious how that band design would work. Also- what about audio? (AirPods the assumed solution?) Would passthrough be good enough that flipping up wouldn't be a need? https://twitter.com/...
  • @jetscott Scott Stein on x
This is definitely sounding Varjo-esque. Haven't tried their latest headset, but it costs $3000-$5000 https://www.cnet.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Not sure you understand what mixed reality is. Unless those 8K displays can let natural light through, they are VR, not MR. Analog->Digital->Analog is VR. https://twitter.com/...

Exclusive: We have new reporting about an Apple mixed-reality device, including a drawing based on a prototype. What do you think? Is this a potential design that could attract more customers and make VR and MR mainstream? @alexeheath @waynema https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
