Hands-on with Universal Control: Apple's most impressive new feature in years that bridges the gap between macOS and iPadOS without requiring Apple peripherals

It's super cool, super niche, and Apple at its best  —  It's been a good month for Mac desktop setup aficionados.

I wish Universal Control just worked between two iPads, really annoying that it requires a Mac to be in the equation!
  • @ijustine @ijustine on x
I just tried Apple's Universal Control for the first time and it's incredible.. using one mouse and keyboard to control up to 3 different devices signed into the same iCloud = this video. MAGIC!!!! https://twitter.com/...

I tried Logitech Flow today between Mac OS and Windows and it worked pretty damn well! Makes my workflow better https://twitter.com/...
  • @aricohn Ari Cohn on x
So, um, Logitech's Flow software feature has allowed you to do exactly this for a long time (including dragging files between different machines). Hardly an innovative feature. https://twitter.com/...

.@345triangle is more enamored by Universal Control than I am, so I made him write about it: https://www.theverge.com/...

It's this kind of feature that makes Apple's “lock-in” a positive. Just as good: shared clipboard that lets you copy/paste between devices. Universal Control is Apple's most impressive new feature in years https://t.co/70SHBgOljh via @Verge

Universal Control in macOS 12.3 is insane. I often switch between my Mac Mini and Macbook, and this makes it so much easier to do so.
  • @simonbs Simon B. Støvring on x
Universal Control feels like one of those features that only Apple can pull off so well. It's so smooth that it feels like magic.
  • @jeffseibert Jeff Seibert on x
Upgraded to macOS 12.3 on my iMac and MBP. Universal Control is insane! One of the most magical “it just works” experiences in years.
  • @briantong Brian Tong on x
I'm still floored by how good Universal Control is. It's BONKERS! Now I'll see how often I use it, but it's NIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE! https://twitter.com/...
  • @bengeskin Ben Geskin on x
I know that everyone already said that but... UNIVERSAL CONTROL IS AWESOME 😍
  • @mcsquared96 Monica Chin on x
While Apple's Universal Control is not necessarily something essential for my life, it is incredibly sick. @345triangle with more about this feature https://twitter.com/...

I spent the past week using the new iPad Air with M1. It's the most balanced iPad in Apple's lineup, now with iPad Pro performance. If iPadOS 16 doesn't bring any new pro features, I may switch to this. My story: iPad Air 2022 Review: Refined Balance https://www.macstories.net/..…

We're once again in the existential crisis period of iPad cycle. iPad is two things: hardware — which is incredible, and platform, which evolves in fits and starts. Still so much untapped potential on the table; where are you going with this, and why is it taking so long?
  • @jo … Josh Jagdfeld⚡️🇺 🇦 on x
@viticci Do you really believe that? I've used an Air after using my 12.9" Pro, and the 120 Hz is hard to unsee when you don't have it anymore. Almost jarring, to be honest.

Just under 2 days before I'm excited to bring you guys thorough coverage of the Mac Studio and M1 Ultra chip. What info are you seeking most?
  • @viticci Federico Viticci on x
@joshjagdfeld Depending on how things go with iPadOS this year, if I decide to primarily work from macOS again, I think I could live with the Air even without ProMotion.

you know, Steve Jobs once said that software on “smart phones” was like baby software when introducing iPhoneOS and that's exactly how I feel about iPadOS. it's like baby software for iPad. https://twitter.com/...

We're never not in this state. I think at some point you just realize there is no “plan”. It's not going anywhere. It is what it is, an easy way to use existing components (iOS, Apple silicon) to get a fairly reliable number of extra sales. [Quote tweets @stroughtonsmith from 201…

How does iPad expand to bigger screens, new forms? All pieces are already in OS — menu bar, windowing, mouse & keyboard — for a profound expansion of UI & platform, if they were just rearranged. Years go by, little happens. Intentionally held back to avoid stepping on Mac's toes …

My favorite detail of the new iPad Air: the new Blue color. It's a real color! It may not seem like it, but the iPad on the left is the 2020 iPad Air in ‘Sky Blue’. New Air on the right. https://www.macstories.net/... https://twitter.com/...

I'm loving the new iPad Air. It has the power of my iPad Pro but the size of something that fits the current version of iPadOS. Also blue, a real blue. I didn't have to do any weird tricks to get the blue to show up in the video. 🥲
