100mph. Ukraine says its military-grade Starshield connection stopped working above that speed without warning, disrupting combat drones. By Saturday, President Zelenskyy said the restriction remained and appeared to affect only Ukraine.
Limits set elsewhere reached the battlefield and the supermarket
Ukraine reported that the Starshield restriction disrupted drone missions. Zelenskyy called it a planned operation rather than a technical fault; that remains his assessment, not an established explanation of why SpaceX acted. For Ukraine, the operational problem was immediate: it had built missions around a connection whose limits it could not set.
Attackers targeted Danfoss-managed refrigeration across hundreds of French supermarkets, heating systems to 50°C for roughly six hours and forcing stores to discard damaged food. An intrusion differs from a service restriction, but both incidents put a remote change into equipment people were using. In France, the cost was food on the shelves.
AI growth did not make its costs disappear
CoreWeave shares fell more than 15% as its bond yields approached 15%. Meanwhile, Anthropic told investors its revenue rose to $16.8 billion in Q3 from $11.5 billion in Q2 and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis. Anthropic’s growth does not pay CoreWeave’s bondholders. The two reports show how demand for AI can rise while financing the infrastructure remains expensive.
Customers were counting, too. Accenture capped Claude spending for many employees at $29 a month per person; some had spent as much as $1,000 monthly. The $1,000 figure was a reported high, not the previous average. The cap gives Accenture a way to limit its bill even as it continues to use the model.
Open models still face national gates
Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weight model with 816 billion total parameters and 42 billion active parameters. China proposed adding 23 AI technologies, including LLMs and chip designs, to its export-control list. Meta’s release gives others a model they can run; China’s proposal, if adopted, would restrict which technologies can leave the country. A model’s availability depends on more than its developer’s distribution choice.
Apple's queue did not reverse a shrinking market
iPhone Duo delivery dates slipped to late January within hours of preorders opening, and Apple called demand extraordinary. Yet reports this week put global Q3 smartphone shipments down roughly 20% to 22% year over year. A preorder wait measures orders against Apple’s initial allocation; it cannot establish that the broader market has recovered.
The 100mph cutoff mattered because Ukraine’s drones were already relying on the connection. It is the limit discovered after a system is in use that leaves its user with the least room to respond.
