Google’s Late Gemini Switch Stops at Connected Cars

On September 4, 2026, Google will begin removing Google Assistant from Android and Wear OS and replacing it with Gemini, while connected cars keep Assistant. The cited report gives cars neither a reason for staying behind nor a date to follow.

Google missed its 2025 goal and set no finish date

By routing assistant requests through Gemini, Google can reach supported Android and Wear OS users without asking them to install a separate application.

Google had said Gemini would replace Assistant on eligible Android phones, but the company missed its goal of completing the transition on most Android devices by the end of 2025 and pushed the work into 2026. Google now says it will “begin” removing Assistant on September 4; it does not specify a completion date or how many devices will move that day.

Safety, latency and hardware remain unsupported explanations

Google has not attributed the connected-car decision to safety, latency, hardware limits or automaker agreements. Those explanations may sound plausible, but the published record supports none of them.

The cited reports also do not show that cars were scheduled to migrate with phones and watches. Google’s announcement gives Android and Wear OS a start date while giving connected cars neither a Gemini date nor a transition path. September 4 therefore cannot serve as an ecosystem-wide retirement date for Assistant.

Google is scaling Gemini product by product

Google’s Chrome auto-browse integration can schedule apartment viewings and autofill flight information with user permission. When a user asks Gemini to schedule a viewing, Chrome can move from interpreting the request to changing a form or calendar. The report establishes permission for those Chrome tasks but does not define how long approval lasts or how it interacts with Android, Workspace or cars.

Google describes its Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, built on Vertex AI, as a system for managing the full lifecycle of AI agent fleets. The announcement places administration around agents with different tools and owners, although Google does not publish results for policy violations, failed actions or rollbacks.

On January 20, 2026, The Information reported, citing internal Google data, that Gemini API traffic had risen sharply over five months.

Google also said Gemini Enterprise had reached eight million subscribers. “Subscribers” does not establish eight million organizations, agents or autonomous workflows.
