Since 2025, Taipei-linked coverage has shifted from Apple supply-chain adjustments to AI-driven chip capacity, materials shortages and production diversification.

Who they are

Taipei appears in the coverage as a focal point for Taiwan’s technology and electronics supply chain, especially the network around TSMC, Apple, Foxconn and global device makers. Stories use it as the setting and connective point for semiconductor manufacturing, component sourcing and the shifting geography of production across China, Vietnam, India and the United States.

The recent arc

Coverage was most intense in 2021, when component constraints and leading-edge chip plans converged: Apple cut iPad output to redirect chips to the iPhone 13, Apple and Intel were reported as early adopters of TSMC’s 3nm process, and shortages postponed some MacBook and iPad production. Earlier, the U.S. export-control response that led TSMC to halt new Huawei orders showed how quickly policy could reshape the Taiwan-centered chip ecosystem.

The more recent phase is driven by AI demand and supply-chain relocation rather than a single consumer-device cycle. Late-2025 and January 2026 reports track TSMC accelerating Arizona production, memory capacity approaching full utilization, Apple and Qualcomm seeking glass-cloth fiber for chip substrates and PCBs, and Taiwan’s exports to the U.S. surpassing those to China including Hong Kong in 2025. Google’s plan to develop high-end Pixels in Vietnam and Microsoft’s aim to move most new-product production outside China reinforce the diversification theme.

The tension

The central tension is between Taiwan’s strategic role in advanced chips and the push by customers and governments to reduce China exposure. TSMC’s reported removal of Chinese equipment from its advanced 2nm process, its Arizona expansion, Apple’s supplier ramp in India, Vietnam and Thailand, and Foxconn’s earlier moves from China to Vietnam all place Taipei’s supply-chain orbit at the intersection of U.S.-China restrictions, customer resilience planning and demand for leading-edge capacity.

Why it matters

If AI demand and production diversification persist, Taipei’s surrounding technology ecosystem remains consequential not simply as an assembly base but as a coordinating center for advanced-chip supply, materials and customer allocation decisions. The coverage also suggests the position is being redistributed rather than displaced: more manufacturing is moving to the U.S., Vietnam and India, while TSMC’s process leadership and Taiwan’s trade links remain central. How much value stays concentrated in Taiwan will depend on whether capacity, equipment access and materials supply can keep pace with that geographic spread.

TAIPEI has appeared in 114 articles since 2018-07. Coverage peaked in 2025Q1 with 5 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, China, TSMC, Taiwan.
