More than 1,200 founders and CEOs petitioned Congress after SVB’s March 2023 collapse exposed the startup sector’s dependence on a single banking hub.

Who they are

SVB, or Silicon Valley Bank, appears in coverage as the former “Bank of Startups”: a specialist lender and deposit holder for venture-backed companies, founders, investors and related technology businesses. Its failure made it a reference point for bank supervision, startup finance and the resilience of concentrated depositor bases.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked in the first quarter of 2023, when California regulators closed SVB and appointed the FDIC receiver. Reporting traced the collapse to interest-rate exposure, concentrated depositors and VC herd behavior, while more than 300 VC firms backed calls for intervention and more than 1,200 founders and CEOs signed a Y Combinator petition to Congress. The FDIC’s response, including its effort to find a buyer and plans to break up the bank, kept SVB central to the immediate policy story.

The subsequent coverage shifted from failure mechanics to the aftermath for startup banking. HSBC acquired SVB UK for £1 and later rebranded it HSBC Innovation Banking; in 2024, SVB agreed to sell its $9.8 billion VC arm, SVB Capital, to a Brookfield- and Sequoia Heritage-backed buyer for $340 million. A year after the collapse, the Financial Times reported that replacement venture-debt options had not matched the one-stop-shop model SVB had offered, while Mercury’s 2025 funding story linked its deposit growth to the post-SVB reshuffle.

The tension

The central tension is between the efficiency of a bank built around Silicon Valley’s tightly connected venture ecosystem and the fragility created by that same concentration. SVB’s collapse was tied in coverage to questions over Dodd-Frank stress-test changes and regulatory oversight, while the failures of Signature and Silvergate extended concerns into crypto: Circle’s USDC briefly depegged as investors reacted to its SVB exposure.

Why it matters

If the post-collapse fragmentation persists, startups and venture investors may continue to face a less integrated market for deposits, lending and other financial services, even as firms such as HSBC Innovation Banking and Mercury seek to absorb parts of the opportunity. The coverage also leaves SVB as a durable test case for whether tailored regulation can contain the risks of specialized banks without eliminating the financing infrastructure that startup ecosystems rely on.

SVB has appeared in 67 articles since 2023-03. Coverage peaked in 2023Q1 with 54 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Silicon Valley Bank, FDIC, Silicon Valley Bank's, Signature.
