Who they are

Reality Labs is Meta’s hardware and immersive-computing unit, appearing in coverage as the organization behind its VR, AR and wearable ambitions and, according to Business Insider, all of Meta’s hardware. Its story is consequently intertwined with Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to build devices and platforms without relying on Google or Apple as intermediaries.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked in 2026Q1 as Meta retrenched around the unit. In January, Meta said it would lay off more than 1,000 Reality Labs employees and reinvest savings in wearables; reporting said cuts disproportionately hit VR headsets and Horizon Worlds. The Verge then reported that Meta was closing three VR gaming studios and ending new content and features for Supernatural. A further round of roughly 700 layoffs in March coincided with reports of a flatter, AI-native “pods” structure and a new applied-AI engineering organization.

The tension

The central tension is between the cost of Meta’s long-running VR and metaverse investment and its effort to redirect the unit’s hardware capabilities toward AI glasses and wearables. Reality Labs’ accumulated losses above $80 billion sharpen that trade-off, while its role as Meta’s hardware manufacturer makes it strategic to Zuckerberg’s aim of reducing dependence on Apple and Google rather than simply a discretionary VR business.

Why it matters

If the current trajectory holds, Reality Labs could become less a standalone metaverse-content bet and more the hardware and applied-AI arm of Meta’s wearable strategy. The outcome remains uncertain: the unit’s Q1 revenue missed the cited estimate even as its operating loss was below estimate, and the studio closures and staffing cuts suggest Meta is still deciding which parts of immersive computing can support that broader device ambition.
