Apple’s iOS 26.5 made RCS end-to-end encryption available in beta for supported carriers, advancing the protocol from Android-led SMS replacement toward cross-platform security.

Who they are

RCS is the messaging standard at the center of coverage about modernizing carrier texting between Android and iPhone users. Stories position Google and Google Messages as its longtime Android advocates, while Apple’s adoption in iOS 18 turned RCS into the mechanism for replacing basic SMS behavior in cross-platform conversations without replacing Apple’s iMessage.

The recent arc

The coverage pivoted sharply in late 2023 when Apple said it would adopt the GSMA’s RCS standard in a later software update, after years in which Google’s RCS rollout, carrier support and Android messaging features dominated. Apple’s iOS 18 support then moved the story from a public interoperability dispute to implementation across select US carriers and iPhone beta users.

More recently, the key development has been security rather than basic availability. The GSMA’s March 2025 standard added interoperable end-to-end encryption between platforms, with Apple pledging future support; Apple’s iOS 26.5 subsequently introduced RCS encryption in beta for supported carriers and enabled it by default. Google has also extended RCS beyond chat, using it in Android 12-and-later scam detection and partnering with RapidSOS for RCS-based 911 contact through Google Messages.

The tension

Coverage repeatedly circles the gap between RCS’s promise of richer, safer Android-iPhone messaging and the fragmented reality of platform and carrier implementation. Google pressed for RCS as an alternative to SMS while Apple protected iMessage’s differentiated position, and Apple’s eventual reversal did not itself settle encryption or availability; those now depend on the GSMA standard, OS support and participating carriers. WhatsApp remains a relevant contrast: a cross-platform messaging service built around end-to-end encryption rather than carrier messaging.

Why it matters

If interoperable encryption reaches broadly supported Android and iPhone RCS conversations, ordinary cross-platform texting could gain features and privacy protections that previously varied sharply by device ecosystem. The corpus nevertheless shows that the outcome is contingent on Apple’s follow-through, carrier support and the operational anti-abuse constraints Google cites, so RCS’s significance lies in whether a shared standard can reduce the remaining divide between SMS-era carrier messaging and proprietary apps.
