Meta stopped selling Portal smart displays to consumers in 2022, closing a coverage arc that began with Facebook’s video-chat hardware push and later became muddled by same-name products and a startup.

The arc was also marked by trust and execution problems: Facebook revised its position on whether Portal data could support ad targeting, asked employees to remove reviews after staff posted five-star Amazon ratings, and later removed the wake word because customer confusion hurt usage.

The tension

Portal sat between Meta’s desire to extend its communication services into the home and the difficult realities of competing in smart displays against Amazon and Alexa while carrying Facebook’s privacy baggage. Its integration with Messenger, Zoom, and AR features made the product more useful, but the coverage repeatedly returned to whether a Facebook-branded camera device could gain consumer confidence and compete as a general-purpose display; Meta’s decision to end consumer sales made that tension decisive.

Why it matters

Portal’s trajectory illustrates the limits of translating a large social and messaging platform into dedicated consumer hardware: service integrations and feature updates did not prevent Meta from retreating to a business-focused strategy and then discontinuing the product. If that direction persists, Portal is more significant as evidence of Meta concentrating hardware bets elsewhere, particularly amid its broader Reality Labs spending, than as an active consumer-device platform. The later same-name startup funding story should be read separately rather than as evidence of a revival of Meta’s Portal.
