Twitter said in December 2020 it would discontinue Periscope’s standalone app after moving most core live-video capabilities into Twitter.

Who they are

Periscope was Twitter’s live-broadcasting app, appearing in coverage as both a standalone mobile product and a source of live video that Twitter progressively integrated into its own iOS and Android apps. Its stories also place it in the wider early livestreaming field alongside Facebook, YouTube and rival Meerkat.

The recent arc

Coverage’s latest phase is an exit rather than a product-expansion story. After December 2020 app-code reports suggested Twitter might shut Periscope down, Twitter confirmed on December 16 that it would discontinue the separate app by March 2021 because most core capabilities had been brought into Twitter. The January 2021 Turkey story then tied Periscope to Twitter and Pinterest’s failure to appoint local representatives under the country’s social-media law.

The preceding product beat was more incremental: in February 2019 Periscope added up to three voice call-in guests and was working on guest video sharing, turning broadcasts toward a talk-show format. That followed earlier coverage of Twitter surfacing Periscope feeds in its iOS app and adding live broadcasting directly to Twitter while keeping Periscope standalone, moves that foreshadowed the later consolidation.

The tension

The central tension is whether a separately branded livestreaming app could remain relevant once Twitter owned the distribution layer and embedded comparable live-video features itself. Coverage also records a dwindling user base, criticism that Twitter did not invest in or communicate clearly about Periscope, and an ongoing child-pornography issue, while the broader market was being reshaped by interactive video formats associated with TikTok, Facebook and other platforms.

Why it matters

Periscope’s wind-down illustrates how live-video products can shift from standalone destinations to features within larger social networks, where audience reach, moderation and product investment are centralized. If that trajectory persists, the relevant question is less whether Periscope can compete independently than how Twitter handles the live-video capabilities and regulatory obligations it absorbed; the corpus does not establish how successful that integration will be.

Periscope has appeared in 58 articles since 2015-03. Coverage peaked in 2016Q3 with 8 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Twitter, Facebook, TechCrunch, Meerkat.
