In 2022, Facebook split News Feed into recommendation-led Home and chronological Feeds, crystallizing a shift from a social-ranking product into a response to TikTok-style consumption.

Who they are

News Feed is Facebook’s central content-distribution and ranking surface, later renamed Feed by Meta, through which the company has shaped what users see from friends, Pages, Groups, publishers, and increasingly recommended video. Coverage treats it less as a standalone company than as the operational center of Facebook’s product policy, publisher relationships, moderation choices, and advertising environment.

The recent arc

The most concentrated recent scrutiny came in late 2021, when reporting moved beyond routine ranking updates to the consequences and testing of the system. Internal-document coverage described integrity “holdout” experiments that withheld protections from some users, while Big Technology reported that Facebook’s 2018 test of disabling ranking reduced engagement and increased both Groups content and ad views. At the same time, Facebook was testing controls that let people alter the amount of Feed content from friends, family, Groups, and Pages, and expanding advertiser protections around sensitive topics.

In 2022, the story shifted from governance of the existing ranking system to a product redesign under competitive pressure: Facebook divided the experience into TikTok-style, recommendation-heavy Home and chronological Feeds. That transition was complicated by Meta’s confirmation that a ranking failure had elevated views of harmful content by up to 30% over six months. The latest 2024 appearance is retrospective, with Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth discussing the product’s construction and history alongside Meta’s broader competition with Apple and work in AR and VR.

The tension

Coverage repeatedly circles the trade-off between engagement-driven personalization and the social, civic, and safety costs of algorithmic distribution. Facebook’s 2018 move to prioritize friends over publishers and brands, its efforts to demote clickbait, spam, fake stories, and sensational health claims, and its later harmful-content ranking failure show how each adjustment can redistribute attention among users, publishers, advertisers, and problematic material. The Home redesign also places Feed in a direct product contest with TikTok’s recommendation model.

Why it matters

If the trajectory holds, Feed’s importance will lie in whether Meta can combine recommendation-led discovery with credible user control, chronological access, and safeguards against harmful amplification. The corpus shows that ranking changes affect publisher visibility, engagement, advertising, and content exposure at once; the unresolved question is whether the split between Home and Feeds makes those trade-offs more manageable or merely makes them more visible.
