LG Display’s $1.54B sale of its China LCD-plant stake to TCL’s CSOT capped coverage shifting from Apple’s iPhone screen choices to gaming hardware and panel-industry retrenchment.

Who they are

LCD appears in coverage as the liquid-crystal display technology and panel category used across phones, tablets, gaming handhelds, VR headsets and televisions, rather than as a standalone consumer brand. Its stories connect device makers’ product positioning with the display supply chain, particularly Apple, Foxconn, Sharp, Samsung, LG Display and Chinese panel operations.

The recent arc

The all-time coverage high came in 2018Q3, when LCD was central to Apple’s iPhone lineup split: reporting contrasted a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone with the OLED iPhone Xs and Xs Max. That followed 2017 reports that Apple was considering both curved OLED and LCD models, making LCD a recurring marker of product tiering during the iPhone X-era transition.

More recently, coverage peaked in 2023Q3 around portable gaming hardware, including Sony’s PlayStation Portal and reports that Nintendo’s next console would use an LCD display. In 2024, the focus broadened to Nintendo’s reported 8-inch LCD Switch successor, MSI’s Claw handheld and Meta Quest 3S’s reuse of Quest 2’s LCD panel. The latest story is OnePlus’s Pad 3, while Reuters’ report that LG Display would sell its China large-LCD plant stake to TCL unit CSOT marked a parallel supply-side consolidation.

The tension

The persistent tension is LCD’s role as a cost-conscious, established display choice against OLED’s premium positioning. Apple’s iPhone reporting made that contrast explicit, while recent Nintendo, Sony, MSI, Meta and OnePlus stories show LCD continuing to fit devices where display size, price and hardware design matter. At the manufacturing level, LG Display’s exit from LCD production in China and CSOT’s acquisition point to a changing ownership base for a mature panel business.

Why it matters

If this trajectory holds, LCD coverage will increasingly be less about flagship-phone differentiation and more about how manufacturers balance affordability, scale and display quality in handhelds, tablets and mixed-reality devices. The LG Display-CSOT transaction also suggests that leadership in the remaining large-panel supply chain may matter as much as the technology’s presence in any single device, though the corpus does not establish how quickly LCD demand will shift across categories.

LCD has appeared in 51 articles since 2015-04. Coverage peaked in 2023Q3 with 3 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, iPhones, Foxconn, iPhone.
