Apple’s 2023 commitment to add RCS cross-platform texting put iMessage at the center of an interoperability fight that later eased after the EU declined DMA regulation.

Who they are

iMessage is Apple’s messaging service and a recurring lens on the iPhone ecosystem: stories position it both as a core Apple communications feature and as a boundary between Apple users and rival messaging or mobile platforms. Coverage links it closely to iPhone, Android, WhatsApp, Google, and Apple’s operating-system releases.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked in 2023Q4, when Apple’s decision to adopt the GSM-backed RCS standard “later next year” brought iMessage-style capabilities to cross-platform texts, while Apple also blocked Beeper Mini and revoked access for some Beeper users on Mac. Those stories made iMessage less a product-update subject than a test of how tightly Apple can control access to its messaging network.

The following phase shifted toward policy and platform safety. The EU ended its DMA investigation without regulating iMessage as a dominant service, after Google and EU telecoms had urged the European Commission to require compatibility with rivals. Apple then added an Australia-only child-safety reporting feature in the iOS 18.2 beta, while recent 2026 stories show startups such as Series and Poke treating text messaging and iMessage as surfaces for AI-enabled social and task services.

The tension

The central tension is between Apple’s control of iMessage and demands for interoperability. Beeper’s unauthorized clients directly challenged that control; Google and EU telcos pressed for regulatory compatibility; and RCS offers a standards-based improvement to Android-to-iPhone messaging without turning iMessage itself into an open rival-access service. WhatsApp’s growing US presence adds a separate competitive alternative built around its own encrypted network.

Why it matters

If RCS adoption and messaging-based AI services continue to develop, iMessage’s significance may increasingly rest on how Apple preserves differentiation while accommodating cross-platform expectations. The EU’s decision not to apply DMA obligations removes one immediate pressure point, but the Beeper dispute, rival advocacy, and WhatsApp’s expansion indicate that access, switching friction, and messaging-network control can return as product or policy issues.
