Who they are

Coverage uses GMV, or gross merchandise value, as a transaction-volume measure rather than as an operating company: it appears in earnings reports to gauge the scale and growth of marketplaces, commerce software platforms and buy-now-pay-later providers. Shopify and eBay are the most frequent anchors, with Affirm, Klarna, Vinted, Shopee and regional delivery platforms also reporting the metric.

Coverage peaked in Q1 2025 and has since remained focused on quarterly earnings, with the largest recent stories testing whether GMV growth is translating into revenue, profit and market expectations. Shopify’s Q1 2026 report put GMV at $100.74B, up 35% year over year, but its forecast for slower Q2 revenue growth sent SHOP down 15.63%; that contrast captures the coverage’s shift from raw volume expansion to the quality and durability of growth.

Recent reports broadened the lens beyond Shopify. eBay reported GMV up 10% to $21.2B in Q4 2025 and up 18% to $22.2B in Q1 2026 alongside revenue beats; Klarna reported Q1 GMV up 33% to $33.7B while returning to a small profit; and Affirm reported GMV up 36% to $13.8B in its Q2. The metric is also being used at market level, including Momentum Works’ estimate that Southeast Asian online food-delivery GMV rose 18% in 2025.

The tension

The recurring tension is between GMV as a persuasive indicator of commerce activity and the financial outcomes investors ultimately value. Shopify’s volume growth has repeatedly accompanied revenue beats, but its May 2026 share decline despite 35% GMV growth shows guidance can outweigh the headline figure; eBay’s reports likewise pair GMV with revenue, net income and buyer trends. Earlier coverage of Alibaba and JD.com declining to disclose 618 GMV figures underscores that the metric’s prominence—and its limits as a competitive scoreboard—remain contested.

Why it matters

If the current pattern holds, GMV will remain a cross-sector benchmark for comparing demand across merchant platforms, marketplaces, consumer credit and delivery networks, while becoming less sufficient on its own to establish business strength. The key question in future coverage will be whether high transaction volume produces sustained revenue growth, profitability and credible outlooks, particularly as Shopify, eBay, Klarna and Affirm report materially different business models alongside the same measure.
