Who they are

In this coverage, Autopilot chiefly refers to Tesla’s driver-assistance system, usually discussed alongside Full Self-Driving, rather than a standalone company. The tension

The central tension is between Tesla’s presentation of Autopilot and Full Self-Driving as advancing automation products and regulators’, courts’ and safety critics’ concerns that drivers can overestimate their capabilities or use them where they should not. NHTSA’s long-running probe, the California DMV ruling, and crash litigation all focus that dispute, while Elon Musk’s AI Day linkage between Autopilot software and Optimus places the system within Tesla’s broader claim to AI leadership.

Why it matters
