Neither Google nor OpenAI's infra could handle the potential scale of Apple's userbase, given the scaling issues both companies are having. Even Google doesn't have enough GPUs.

Why this makes sense for Apple: 1) Go with the devil it knows 2) Distance itself from the liability of building something that hallucinates and appears too ‘woke’ Also shows that building anything as good as GPT-4 is way harder than businesses realize.

Apple will have several new AI features based on its own, homegrown models. But they'll be using a partner — whether it ends up being Google, or OpenAI — to power generative AI features. A deal would be reminiscent of the Apple and Google search engine partnership.

The mobile operating system duopoly sharing the same AI technology provided by one of them would be the clearest case for #antitrust intervention yet in the entire AI partnering context. Smartphones are going to be the main point of entry into the AI world for billions of users.

Recently there may have been signs of Google disagreeing with *some* of Apple's iOS walled garden policies. But in the past this “cartelopoly” always solved the problem with money, as the DOJ v. Google trial in the U.S. showed. Now they may team up on AI, where Apple is behind.

Antitrust/regulatory ‘risks’ factored into the business decision: a very complex picture for Apple and its potential AI partners. DMA's take: as long as those AI tools aim to enhance the usage of the operating system, they should be considered to form part of that CPS.

I hope this isn't the case. Apple is our best hope for local AI and data ownership. The amount of personal data that will be ingested into cloud hosted AI is not good for society. We are in danger of repeating the mistake of the user data mining ad supported internet.
